How do I change my openid provider?

I (stupidly?) logged out of the forum to test its behavior for new users

Now I can't log back in again because my old open id no longer functions because the provider site is dead (myopenid.com).

I went to another open id provider (verisign) and got a new id, BUT...

My new open id is treated as a "new user" when I try to login to the forum... so here I am, Breck Carter Again, with a single point.

The SQL Anywhere forum user profile - User tools - Authentication settings - Add new provider button takes you to the User login where presumably you can provide a different OpenId Url that you have created using the same email address and a different OpenId provider.

This is probably "A Good Thing For Everyone Using An OpenId To Do Ahead Of Time".

Sadly, the "Ahead Of Time" part doesn't apply to me.

I'm just glad THIS is the only place I'm "Using An OpenId" which IMO is an overly complex technology with unintended consequences.

For example, what happens to all the data when a provider goes dark?

And did you know, ANYONE can become an OpenId provider? You can even become your OWN OpenId provider?

Does anyone actually believe OpenId is good idea?

...might as well just post our passwords on Facebook ...easier than sending an email to Endgame, Inc. and it will get there just the same 🙂

In former StackExchange times, the former administrator was able to merge my two "login-attempts" to one... Possibly the current forum software allows for that, too.

@Breck: Please log out and log back in again using the Verisign ID. I've changed your Verisign ID to be associated with your original user ID rather than the new one.

As you say, the best idea to avoid this kind of problem is to set up multiple authentication providers. There are lots - you can use Google, Yahoo, Blogger, WordPress, LiveJournal, Flickr, and many others. (I also use MyOpenID which seems to be down right now. No idea if that's permanent or temporary.)

Simply create an account on any one of those services and that will create an OpenID for you.

Note: The following instructions are recommended for everyone!

To set up multiple providers, click on your name at the very top of the page. Then click the little triangle next to "User tools" and select "Authentication settings". That page will list the authentication providers you currently have set up. Click on "Add new provider" and enter the URL of the provider. It will ask you to log in with that provider if you haven't already, and then will associate that account with your sqlanywhere-forum account. You can then use any one of the providers listed to log in here.
