Hi Experts,
I have a BPM Process which I would like to show/print on a pdf. How can I export BPMN into a pdf file?
I do not want to re-draw the process in ARIS Express.
What solutions are out there for this?
Thanks for your help.
Rahim.
Hi Rahim,
You can export your BPM in BPMN format and import this into other software such as some versions of Aris or Visio, as well as many other packages. However, I've been pretty disappointed with this functionality when I've tried it. You can export as an image but this also doesn't work very well I'm afraid.
Sorry!

Yes, its disappointing that NWDS doesn't provide any such option to export the process to PDF.
I believe other BPM products such as websphere, intalio etc do provide such options. Hopefully NWDS will have this feature sometime soon
reg the PDF export, even I couldn't find any convincing option. A crude way to export in PDF would be via browser Add -on.
Open the Process Definition via NWA -> convert the page to PDF using browser add-ons like PDFCrowd or PDf Download
I know this doesn't give a perfect PDF, but so far it has been solving my basic purpose.

Hi Sandip,
Although there's no PDF export in NWDS, the Save as Image (from the diagram or pool) to JPG format works quite well, and might give you a better or at least another option.
The BPMN2.0 XML Export is not too bad but a number of vendors only support the BPMN 2.0 shapes not the XML format.... unless you pay extra, e.g. there are cloud services for converting BPMN 2.0 XML from/to Visio for instance.
If you would like the image exported in PDF I would strongly recommend you enter your request in the Idea Place for BPM (you can get to Idea Places from the SCN main navigation banner above.

Jocelyn
Hi Jocelyn,
I find the save as image doesn't work very well at all. It creates a decent looking JPG (or BMP) at first glance but when the image is looked at properly and zoomed to a usable level, none of the text is clear. It appears to be "fuzzy" for want of a better word, as if the export is compressing the image and losing detail. This becomes useless if printed out.
This is causing me a headache as I have quite a complex parent process with a number of referenced child processes and my customer would love to be able to get the flow blown up on to A1 paper and on the wall for their service delivery to reference.
I've tried this feature on numerous versions of NWDS since early 7.2, up to my current 7.3 SP7 P1 and never had any success unfortunately. Whilst export to PDF would be useful as well, I think it would be good if the basic export to image was fully functional first.
As for the export to BPMN, we gave up on that option when we discovered the target import software couldn't cope (as it's a load of **** in the words of my architect colleagues!) however I have noticed if you export a BPMN and then directly re-import it back into the same NWDS instance, you get a lot of errors/warnings in the import log - I don't know how worried I should be about that?!
Thanks,
Gareth.

You have raised quite a good points...
I agree the export to Image feature should be fixed..Additionally there should be an Export to PDF function, its a must in my opinion....There has been many client request to get the Process Diagram done a PDF format...
On the Import BPMN 2.0 functionality in NWDS, apart from the errors/warnings, you may also find that occasionally the Sequence Flow connectors are broken, This problem was there in earlier version, haven't tested it on the 7.3 SP07 though...

Hi Jocelyn
Thanks for your inputs.
I have created a request in the Idea Space for PDF Export functionality. Here is the link
https://cw.sdn.sap.com/cw/ideas/11303
Hopefully it will be considered by the Development team.

Sandip
