Difference between ODP and Open ODS

Hi

Hi,

I would like to know the difference between the ODP ( Operation Data provisioning ) and Operation Data Store?

1)For the BW Extractors:

Should we go with the ODP or Open ODS ?, as both support it.

2) For the SLT ( Tables( SAP and Non-SAP )

Should we go with the ODP or Open ODS ?, as both support it.

3) For the ( HANA : Information Views( Attr View, Analytical Views, Calc Views )

Should we go with the ODP or Open ODS?

So in the LSA ++ architecture , which type is recommended  ( Open ODS or ODP ).

What Major advantages/disadvantages between these two.

Thanks in advance for your answers.

Regards,

Adhvi.

Hi Adhvi,

Same question is beign revolving around  in SCN, you can secarch and get  detailed answers.

I will also try to  give an overview of these fetaures:

In BW basically there are three layers

1) Extraction Layer --> Technically this layer is supported by "Source system" and "Data source" in BW

2) Transformation/Staging Layer --> Technically this layer is supported by WODSO and DSO in BW

3)Reporting layer  layer -->Cube,MultiProvider.

In the latest release of BW along with the excisting source systems you will get an additional optional of ODP source system

So now in Extarction Layer - Along with other source system types you get additional option of ODP sosurce system.

In the above picture you can see two types of BW source systems one is standard one and other is a ODP source systems similary for ther source systems like SAPI and extrenal source systems.

The reason for giving both the options is when you migrate your systems your excisting source systems should remain intact.

So the ODP Plays a role in Extarction Layer.

Coming to Open ODS View this will come under staging / reporting layer. In latest BW relases especially in HANA we are trying to reduce the number of layers and try to merge the Staging and reporting layer. So the Open ODS will be a new type of infoprovider which has a role to hold the Data or Virtualise the data once the data is extracted via source systems.

So the conclusion is

ODP - is an new technology which helps you to extarct data

ODS - is an new technology which heps you to store or virtualise the extracted data.

Now you might question wat is the advantage of ODP should I go and change all my excisting extractors to this new ODP source system?

My recomendation is donot touch any of your excisting setup initially but whenever you try to implement new extractors or new extraction use this ODP because this ODP has many advantages. Then Slowly you can migrate your old extractors.

Coming to your other question: For extrating from SLT and HANA views  use ODP.

I hope your confusion will be cleared now and I have answered your question.

Now with this basic understanding go through the below links to know more about ODP & ODS
