In Database Expert trying to add a table to an existing report, CR stops working, error ... Crystal Reports has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly ... debug/close program
also unable to create a new CR based on same table. can connect to the db and select tables, but CR crashes when trying to link tables together. Error ... Crystal Reports has stopped working. Windows can check online for a solution to the problem... (see attached).
same issues on two diff PCs
Notes: recently upgraded from XPsp2 with CR 8.5 to Win7 with CR14. Fresh install, but the ODBC was probably ported over.
Thanks
Hi R,
Please let us know the name and version of Reporting Database and the detail version of SAP
Crystal reports 2011 (Launch Crystal Reports > Help > About).
If the reporting database is not supported then there might be chances of crashing.

Couple of suggestions:
1) Make sure the %TEMP% folder has read / write permissions.
2) Currently you are using Service Pack 1. Upating to SP 2 would also bea good idea. I think this link will still work today: SAP Box Attachment

I am having the same issue. Whenever I select the Link tab under the Database Expert I get the "Crystal Reports has stopped working crash".
I have tried the UAC and program compatibility settings. I have checked the permissions to the %TEMP% directory. I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled the product twice and I am running 2013 SP2. I don't know what else to try.
I am reporting against various databases and regardless of database or driver, I get the error when I click Link under the Database Expert. This has essentially made CR unusable for me as I can't link tables.
Any further suggestions?
Do you see any abandoned tmp files / rpt files in the temp dir? If you do, clean those out and try again.
Other than that, you may want to see what Process Monitor tells you re. where the temp files are being created and check the permissions there.

I deleted all of the files in the %TEMP% directory. I still get the error when I click on the Link tab in Database Explorer.
I ran Process Monitor, as you suggested, and when I click on Link in the Database Explorer, I get hundreds of errors for the Operation QueryNameInformationFile that Say "BUFFER OVERFLOW" and the program crashes. All of the open files seem to have this error. It is trying to read from the program directory, system32, syswow64 and many others. I do not see anything related to the %TEMP% variable or the directory that it points to.
Any more ideas?
In my case, it doesn't matter how many tables in the report, whether they are new or existing reports. I've tried to limit the tables as you suggest. I get the crash EVERY TIME I click on the Link tab in Database Export. ODBC, Excel, Access even simple XML files that I want to link cause the crash.
OS is Windows 8.1 64 bit. This was working at some point in time, but I can't seem to track down when it stopped working.
Default printer driver installed is the HP driver.

Antivirus?
Other than that, I'm out of ideas and talking to support may be an idea. You can create a phone incident here:

If this is a CR bug, the incident will be refunded.

After going through all of the permissions and temp directories and what not, here is what I did to solve the issue. Any installation that I did into the default directory (meaning C:\Program Files (x32)) CR would crash when I tried to open the Database Expert. After checking everything that was suggested to me, I ended up installing CR onto my
drive into a CrystalReports directory. This worked wonderfully and I haven't had any issues since. This leads me to believe that there is some permission issue on something. I was never able to pinpoint where or what. It did work and then one day it stopped. From that point forward, I could not get it to work properly in C:\Program Files (x32) at all.
Hope this helps,
I have encountered the same problem. I have also tried uninstalling and re-installing but all to no avail. Can someone please provide some assistance on this?

So, what version of CR are you using? Please be precise...
What have you done so far to try to resolve the issue?

I am using CR2011; I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling. The operating system is Windows 7. I have also tried running as admin as suggested by some. The problem is the same problem as that highlighted in the Watanabe thread. The problem is recorded as not solved. -- the problem occurs when one tries to create a new data connection.
Make sure the %TEMP% directory has read / write permissions. See this:
