Connecting user ids to Employees

I am using javascript to pull a user id from a custom attribute field in process manager. I am having trouble connecting that ID to an employee variable in PG. This would allow me to assign an approval task for that specific user based off the process model attribute. Has anyone had success with this? Thanks
