Can I learn & practice HANA on my home laptop with the server-only version of HANA Express
Or do I need the "Server + Applications" version of HANA Express to fully learn HANA Development?
p.s. As I don't have the requisite 16 GB RAM, so I can't install the "Server + Applications" version of HANA Express.
Request clarification before answering.
Hi, Rajat,
If you want to learn the new techniques HANA native development as Thomas says, you can run the full image with XSA on the cloud providers. Some of them may give you free credits to get started and run for months if you turn the machine off once you're done. They will ask for your credit card details for validation purposes. Here is an example of that: https://developers.sap.com/tutorials/hxe-gcp-getting-started-launcher-xsa.html
And all of the deployment options for express are here: https://developers.sap.com/topics/sap-hana-express.html
Cheers,
Lucia.

With Server only you are missing XSA, HDI and the SAP Web IDE for SAP HANA. So while you can use some older techniques using the HANA Studio in Server only, you are certainly missing out on the modern tools/techniques.

Hi Vladmir,
Thanks for replying. I have already downloaded HANA Express. So do I still need to install HANA studio separately again?
I'm little confused. I thought HANA express serves the purpose of "HANA Studio" !!
Also, as I said I have 8 GB Ram (not up-gradable to higher RAM) , so I can only install the HANA Express(Server only version) & not the "Server+Application" version.
So do I still need Eclipse if I use the "HANA Express" (Server-only version)??
Can you plz clarify?
Regards,
Rajat
If you installed Server only version, then you dont have WEB IDE as a development IDE (its part of that SERVER+Applications) installation option.
In your case, you need to install hana studio and connect it to to your express. But you dont have capabilities of XSA. Just old HANA 1.0 options (XSJS and SQLScript)
