Association in Composite Provider - BW on HANA

I am new to BW. I have a doubt regarding Association in HCPR. As far as I understood, we use it to associate source fields to BW objects(to use its properties/attributes etc) - Please correct me if am wrong.

We have a situation in our AMS project where date format for a field is not reflecting correctly in report. This report is on a HCPR which is on a Calculation view[consists of different P-tables and DSO tables]. If we associate this date field with itself in the HCPR, results are good. Am not sure why we have to associate a BW infoobject to itself again in a HCPR? Also it would be highly helpful if someone explains all the properties in the output section of an HCPR( eg: Association, charactersitic properties, Reporting properties).dev-with-self-association.png

Association allows you to add semantics to a table field. Date are stored in BW as a CHAR(8). If you don't give any semantic to your field, it will be displayed as it is stored physically (20170101).

If you associate it to a date infoObject, BW understands that this CHAR(8) is actually a date and format it accordingly (01.01.2018).

Association will also allows you to add text and attributes to an object.
