ASE traceflag 754

Greetings experts,

I was looking at ase trace flags at

https://wiki.scn.sap.com/wiki/display/SYBASE/ASE+Traceflags

and i noticed that trace flag 754 description changed to this:

"754 Do not use this trace flag. If you find it on, turn it off."

At work, our sybase version "16.0 SP02 PL05 HF2" is using that flag 754 to workaround a bug. Is it dangerous to use flag 754? Why description changed, anyone knows something about? Is there a new flag to use in place of 754?

Thanks

Best wishes,

Hello Edison

This question is probably best answered in a Support case rather than in this forum. I assume the flag would have been suggested by Support as part of a CR investigation or resolution and it would be important to know for which CR that was.

The general answer for any trace flag is that they should always be used with caution and only when understanding the full implications of the flag. Usually, trace flags will be recommended by support and be documented in a KBA. The use of a particular flag (especially those perceived to be risky in some way) will need to be weighed against the issue it is meant to resolve. Generally, the use of a flag is only recommended until a patch becomes available that addresses the underlying issue.

While an issue is under investigation, one or more trace flags may be suggested to get more diagnostics and/or to see if they change a behaviour. This would be under a Support ticket where risks and side-effects can be explained and managed and usually only after the trace flag has been tested in a non-production environment.

I hope this clarifies things and if you want more specifics on this flag in your environment, please open a Support ticket.

Kind regards
