Web-based tooling for native HANA application development continues to evolve at a rapid pace and new capabilities were recently introduced to SAP Web IDE for SAP HANA in 2.0 SPS 01.

Key enhancements include the long awaited MTA.yaml editor, support for prior releases of the SAP HANA database, code snippets for CDS artifacts, significant improvements in the Database Explorer, important changes to the way Node.js packages are accessed, and the ability to create Fiori master-detail UI apps directly against live OData services that have been defined in the same project.

To see these new capabilities in action and get up to speed quickly we've added hands-on tutorials to the SAP HANA  Academy.

Videos showing what's new for SAP Web IDE for SAP HANA with HANA 2 SPS 01 are:
MTA Project / HDI Container /CDS
Database Explorer
Node.js
Fiori Master-Detail

For the bigger picture, the XS Advanced Model playlist covers all aspects of SAP HANA XS advanced model including SAP Web IDE for SAP HANA - from introduction and getting started to more complex scenarios including the use of synonyms and how to perform native machine learning.

If you’re interested to learn about what’s new with HANA 2 SPS 01 in general do check out the following SAP HANA Academy blog as well as Thomas Jung's excellent blog on application developer features.

Have fun!

The SAP HANA Academy provides free online video tutorials for the developers, consultants, partners and customers of SAP HANA.

Topics range from practical how-to instructions on administration, data loading and modeling, and integration with other SAP solutions, to more conceptual projects to help build out new solutions using mobile applications or predictive analysis.

Hi,

I'm pretty much confused as to the versions available of SAP Web IDE.

I've been using SAP Web IDE to develop HTML5 apps and mobile apps, deployed on SCP. I've also used SAP HANA Web-based Development Workbench v.1.120 to develop tables, views, xsodata services on top of SCP ( /sap/hana/ide/editor/and /sap/hana/ide/catalog/).

However both versions of SAP Web IDE I've used so far look different to the one described in this blog.

Could you shed some light on the versions available? Any document giving SAP's official position on this topic?

Thanks

Hi Marco,

I agree the names can be confusing. Here's my perspective:

"SAP HANA Web-based Development Workbench" is the web-based tooling for SAP HANA XS "classic" and has shipped with SAP HANA for many years whether on-premise, HANA Express, or HANA in SCP.

"SAP Web IDE" is used to develop HTML5 apps in SCP and has been around as a pure SCP service for some time and is only available via cloud subscription in SCP.

"SAP Web IDE for SAP HANA" is the web-based tooling for on-premise SAP HANA XS advanced model and ships with SAP HANA.

The latter two are based on the same underlying technology and have a similar look and feel with some common functionality however each comes with specific templates oriented to the tasks developers would typically want to perform.

So for developing native applications in SAP HANA XS "classic" you'd use SAP HANA Web-based Development Workbench (or HANA Studio/Eclipse) and for native applications in SAP HANA XS advanced model you'd use SAP Web IDE for SAP HANA. For pure HTML in SCP you'd use SAP Web IDE.

I hope this clarifies things for you?

Best regards,

Philip

Hello Philip,

thank you very much, that helps clarify things for me.

On the cloud we therefore have: SAP HANA Web-based Development Workbench (SAP XS applications) and SAP Web IDE (HTML5).

On-premise there's SAP Web IDE for SAP HANA (SAP XSA applications)

Will they eventually converge into one and the same tool?

Hello Marco,

For futures, the best place to look is in published product roadmaps (or attend one of the roadmap webinars). Follow this link to see published roadmaps. In the products area you'll find the latest roadmaps for both HANA and SCP as well as links to recordings of recent roadmap webinars.

Best regards,

Philip
