With the launch of SAP Gateway in 2011, SAP took the first step toward providing tools and capabilities that expose SAP data as APIs using standards-based REST and OData protocols for all business functions across SAP Business Suite and SAP Business Warehouse (SAP BW). To complement SAP Gateway, SAP now offers SAP API Management that provides unified, scalable API access and orchestration based on open standards, with enterprise-grade security and seamless connectivity to new and existing applications and platforms (see Figure 1). This unified approach simplifies the integration of SAP and non-SAP applications, reducing development cost and effort, fostering innovation, and allowing companies to participate in the larger API economy.

As APIs continue to proliferate as a way of unlocking digital assets from various data platforms and systems of record, the need for enterprises to standardize the management of, and access to, these APIs and digital assets becomes critical. This is where API management comes in.
API management allows a business to manage all the digital assets that it would publish, manage, monitor, and monetize as APIs on a single platform from the various data sources and systems of record, including cloud and on-premise technologies. This creates a consistent digital asset management strategy that provides enterprise-grade security, strong access control, and efficient governance.
In order to provide these capabilities SAP is entering a strategic partnership with Apigee, developer of the leading platform for digital acceleration. Under the terms of the agreement, SAP will deliver comprehensive API management capabilities built on the Apigee Edge digital acceleration platform. SAP’s Apigee-powered API management will be available as a hosted solution on SAP HANA Cloud Platform, and SAP will also resell Apigee capabilities as on premises solution.
