Big Data College Tour - 4 november 2014: YouTube
Last week Tuesday 4 November 2014 the SAP Big Data (Truck) arrived at Rachelsmolen of Fontys University College as one pit stop during the great tour through The Netherland. About 230 students, lectures, colleges stuff members and invited externals visited the different demos inside the truck and the evening event about Big Data with different guest speakers who are specialists in this area.
Thanks to the main responsible organizer at Fontys, lecturer Mirjam van Kuijk, together with SAP NL it was a great event bringing Big Data and it’s possibilities today and in the future close to the attention of the participants.
(Translated to English: “I am curious what this will bring to us in the future and I hope students can start working on Big Data as early and massive as possible. Towards expectations it will get more important in the future for many industrial sectors and people.”
The secret weapon of ‘die Mannschaft’
Through the demos in the truck it was visible how organizations can use big data to enter new markets, find new customers and to accelerate innovations.
One of the demos was about ‘die Mannschaft’ the German national soccer team. The German national soccer organization used the SAP HANA platform as preparation and during the last world championship.
The platform used an iPad driven system for coaches and players to see their own movements and performances in relation to their team and the opponents highlighting strong and weak aspects of the game.
Evening Event Big Data
During the evening event 3 speakers presented different point of views in the area of big data and they were guided by Mark Raben, SAP, Director Innovation & Product Strategy:

Big data in education
At Fontys Hogeschool Financieel Management for example there are already ideas to let students getting more involved into big data.
“For the moment is business economics an optional subject, but should be integrated in the future“ told Daan Greven, director of the university college of Fontys. “The financial specialist in the area of big data should primarily deliver a contribution together with other disciplines because he owns specific skills. The area of business analytics is by far the domain a financial specialist feels at home. He is able to deliver together with specialists in statistic and marketing oriented specialists a multi-disciplinary look on figures and is by this able to support the strategy and control of a company. A joined curriculum with other students of Fontys is therefore significant!”
Do you want to know more about this subject? Please, don’t hesitate and contact Mirjam van Kuijk of Fontys Hogeschool Financieel Management.
