SAP SQL Data Warehousing with HANA

A growing community of customers and partners is using the SAP HANA in-memory platform for data warehousing purposes for a long time. In recent years, several innovations occurred in this area. Especially the introduction of SAP HANA extended application services advanced version (XSA) and SAP HANA 2.0 changed the way of your traditional software development to a modern and agile data warehouse development in a DevOps style.

At SAP TechEd and other events, we received great interest about these innovations, but were also asked to provide a central place where developers, architects and other people from the community can get more and up to date information.

Therefore, this blog serves as a landing page for SAP SQL Data Warehousing using SAP HANA 2.0 and focusing on native SQL data warehouse development. It is a collection of valuable information in terms of blogs, videos, presentations, and first guidance documents on various aspects of this topic. To make it clear upfront, SAP offers different ways of data warehousing using SAP HANA:

The packaged application approach using SAP BW or SAP BW/4HANA.

The native SQL driven approach with SAP HANA.

The public cloud software service SAP Data Warehouse Cloud.

The approaches complement each other and can be combined using mixed or hybrid architectures.

The SAP HANA Data Warehousing Foundation (DWF) offers a set of packaged data management tools to support SAP SQL Data Warehousing use cases using SAP HANA. For more information please check out the DWF Community Page.

As of TechEd it was not possible to do HANA SQL DW in a public cloud setting (e.g. AWS). is this now available?

If you use an instance of SAP HANA 2.0 SPS02 this works on AWS like it does on-prem.

I have updated a non-functional link and added new links to recent Open SAP courses on Dynamic Tiering and development on SAP Cloud Platform. The data warehousing foundation is currently not available on SCP today, but hopefully soon.

Thanks for the excellent information, Do you have any information how many customers implemented this and what's the success rate compare to SAP BW on HANA? i mean do we get all benefits that we currently have in SAP BW on HANA.

Hi Vijay,

I do not have any numbers. This is not a product like the SAP Business Warehouse, so anyone using SAP HANA could start a project. There have been many customers talking about this approach. The latest one I am aware of was at SAPPHIRE Now: https://sessioncatalog.sapevents.com/go/agendabuilder.sessions/?l=169&sid=59557&locale=en_US

SAP SQL Data Warehousing with HANA is a use case for SAP HANA and not a separate software package. Therefore you can use the SAP HANA installation guide: https://help.sap.com/viewer/product/SAP_HANA_PLATFORM/2.0.05/en-US?task=implement_task

That depends on the component you want to use. For DDO you need the XS Classic guide. The others require XS advanced. Have a look at the getting started and development guides on SAP Help and you will get a better idea.
