This blog is part of the
Lumira 2.0 launch blog series
SAP Lumira, discovery edition brings you an option to connect to a huge list of data sources, build analytics and find insights. In this blog I would like to focus on how you can connect to your SAP ERP systems
Following are the options
- Directly connect to your SAP Query Infosets in ERP using Freehand SQL via JCO driver
- Connect via universes (UNX only) created on top of your SAP ERP Infosets and ABAP function modules
Directly connect to your SAP Query Infosets
Transactional data is distributed across ERP tables and not all fields in the tables are relevant for analysis. Hence to get all the relevant data for a transaction customers would typically use Infosets that would perform join on the tables.
You need to select the "Query with SQL" option on SAP Lumira, discovery edition home screen
In subsequent dialogue, search for "ERP".
And select "
SAP ERP 6 - SAP Java Connector (SAP Jco)"
Click Next
Enter the ERP system details in the subsequent Dialog
Once you are connected to ERP, you can search for infosets you would like to connect to
Select an infoset and default query would automatically be populated for you. You can choose to modify the query if you want, then click preview to see data
In the preview you have option to un-check the columns that you don't want to use for analysis and they would be left out while importing to velcoity engine
Once you are done, click Visualize and you can start with analysis
Connect to SAP ERP via Universe (UNX only)
As a customer you can also create universes to access the data from your ERP system. These universes are created on top of infosets or ABAP function modules
Steps to create universe on an SAP ERP system
In order to work with universe, you need to select the "SAP Universe" option on SAP Lumira, discovery edition home screen
If not already logged in to BI platform, you would be prompted to logon to BI platform to access universes
All the UNX universes would be listed in the subsequent dialog. You need to choose your universe based on SAP ERP infosets/function modules
Click Next
SAP universe query panel is displayed, and now you can select the dimensions and measures that you want to use in your query, define query filters and see data preview
Click finish and your universe data is acquired.
You can start discovering now on your ERP data
Benefits of using Universe for connecting to ERP
There are certain benefits of using universe based connectivity to ERP when compared to direct connectivity. I would like to list some of those benefits here
- You can create universes on ABAP function modules, however these are not accessible via direct connectivity
- Leverage credential mapping or stored credentials for universes for single sign on experience
- Control who can access what based on the rights provided to the users on universes
- Schedule your lumira documents if they are based on universes
- You can use prompts while working with Universes
PS: Now with interoperability between SAP Lumira, discovery edition and SAP Lumira, designer edition, you can create offline dashboard applications based on your SAP ERP data.
