The Lab in Israel is often a front-runner at SAP in tackling innovative projects. Despite our relatively small size, our Lab has multiple strengths. These include knowledge in different areas of expertise, the ability to handle integration across groups and between locations, the technological know-how to orchestrate big projects, and the agility to take decisions and make progress in an atmosphere of uncertainty. The kind of traits that make Israel a start-up nation.

Last June, our Lab was trusted with the challenging and highly-important mission of building a new platform for commercialization at SAP. This project came with high expectations from all stakeholders, and was led by a true sense of urgency. It required a reorganization to create a new group to lead the project, with people from all disciplines, including product, development, project, architects, UA, and UX. The project also involved complex integration between numerous different organizations, services and products, and technical systems. Only six months later, we presented the first version of SAP’s new consumption-based business platform.

The platform provides a rich, relevant, and simple customer experience for finding, trying, buying, and consuming cloud services, without having to make specific, upfront, long-term commitments. The consumption-based business model enables our customers to purchase SAP Cloud Platform services when they need them and for as long as they need them, and pay-per-use for these services.

As the business world around us changes, it is no longer only about delivering great enterprise cloud products. Our cloud experts must provide our customers the flexibility and agility they want and need to consume our cloud products.

We believe that this project demonstrates engineering excellence and the ability to work as a single unit covering 360 degrees, while using the power of execution to materialize a multitude of requirements into a live product in a matter of months. However, we could not have done this alone. The guidance and leadership of Bertram Schulte and the Digital Experience team, together with close collaboration with other teams, such as SAP IT and Hybris, were key to our success. In 2018, our journey goes on, as we continue to enhance the platform and increase its business value by adding support for more services, currencies, and markets, to promote the maturity of the platform.

We are very proud of our strategic contribution to the way SAP does business. Wishing us many more challenges that will enable the Lab to continue soaring to new heights, as the sky’s the limit!
