On March 27th, Susana Cabrera, Head of Transformation & Communications / SAP Global Mobile Services  and our Dartmouth College executive campus ambassador introduced Big Data and shared the wide range of career opportunities available to those who know how to use it effectively, to more than 100 bright young women from the Notre Dame Academy in Villanova, Pennsylvania.

Susana spent the day at Notre Dame Academy as part of its first ever STEM Career Day.  The purpose of the event was to introduce these 9th – 12th graders to the importance of #STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) fields and inspire them to consider these career possibilities beyond high school.

The event provided an amazing opportunity to introduce @Sap to a group of girls who will one day change the world.  Many knew a little about SAP but all were very interested to learn about SAP’s reach and impact around the world, and everyone was surprised when they realized that they too were already users of SAP (e.g.: when texting, purchasing on the App Store, etc.)!

Susana incorporated pieces of The Human Face of Big Data documentary to introduce #BigData in a very understandable way and prompted the girls to consider how it impacts their lives every day.  Students were engaged and shared interesting insights, especially the 9th and 10th graders.  Susana gave the girls a feel for how Big Data will play a role in their future career regardless of whether they choose a career in technology, business, medicine, science, law, or social work.  She used stories from The Human Face of Big Data book and iPad app (e.g.:  “Unlocking the Ocean’s Secrets”, “Million Dollar Blocks”, “Saving Data Saving Lives” and “Pizza and the City”) to get the point across.  Each session ended with a discussion on what it takes to be a data scientist, the skills / knowledge needed to be successful in the field and the types of classes each girl should consider to be able to understand Big Data and use it effectively.

The feedback from the young women participating in the STEM Day sessions and their teachers was incredibly positive.
