SAP HANA 2.0 Studio Installation and Update

Most of you will be intimately familiar with the SAP HANA studio, the central development environment and the main administration tool for SAP HANA 1.0.

Most of you will also be familiar with the fact that no more development has been done for studio after the latest release of SAP HANA 1.0, SPS 12, and that, with SAP HANA 2.0 SPS 02, the first feature deprecation announcement has been made.

How to install and update the latest version of SAP HANA studio - and this should not come as a surprise for a tool that has not seen any development for over 18 months - is exactly the same as it was back in 2016. For this reason, in this blog, I have included the tutorial videos recorded at the time. However, for completeness sake, I thought it would be helpful to have a blog about studio, next to the installation blogs about client, server, and cockpit. Additionally, this enables us to bring together multiple sources of information together for your convenience and reference.

Deprecated Features

For SAP HANA 2.0 SPS 02, SAP HANA Extended Application Services classic model (XS classic) and the SAP HANA Repository are deprecated, which means that, although the features are still included, they will be removed in a future release.

In terms of perspectives, this impacts Application Development, that is, the toolset for developing SAP HANA native application for XS classic, but not the Administration and Database Development perspectives, the last one addressing, in particular, the DataMarts and ABAP on SAP HANA scenarios.

However, you should be aware that for administration and database development, alternatives are available: SAP HANA cockpit and the SAP Web IDE for SAP HANA respectively.

If you would like to test whether your XS knowledge is already advanced enough, see

SAP HANA Studio Supported Platforms

Technical release information about supported platforms for SAP products is listed in the Product Availability Matrix (PAM) on the SAP Support Portal. For SAP HANA studio, the list appears not have been updated since 2015 nor is it explicitly mentioned that later releases are fine as well:

  • Microsoft Windows Vista, 7, 8, Server 2008 (32-bit)

  • Microsoft Windows 7, 8, 10, Server 2008 / R2 (64-bit)

  • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 11 (64-bit)

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6 (64-bit)

  • Mac OS X Mavericks (10.9)

The PAM concerns the SAP HANA studio as a component, bundled with Eclipse and the SAP Java Virtual Machine as a single download from the SAP Software Download Center (Downloads | SAP ONE Support Launchpad).

However, as studio is nothing but an Eclipse plugin, you can also install Eclipse yourself and plug it in. For this, the SAP Development Tools: HANA would be our source of reference, and here we find that, at the time of writing, all we need is some Oxygen; on any supported operating system and JVM. The SAP HANA studio is not available on the Eclipse Marketplace, by the way.

The SAP HANA Studio Installation and Update Guide documents the installation and update process for both cases.

SAP HANA Studio Tutorial Videos

Installation as Eclipse plugin

In this first tutorial video, recorded for the SAP HANA express playlist, we show you how you can install SAP HANA studio as a plugin for Eclipse with as bonus material also how to connect SAP HANA studio to SAP HANA, express edition running on a VM.

Installation as SAP HANA component

In the next video, recorded for SAP HANA Installation and Update - SAP HANA 1.0 SPS 12 playlist, we discuss documentation, the product availability matrix, software downloads, and concepts.

The time markers for the hands-on installations are:

  • Mac OS X [04:24]

  • Microsoft Windows [05:25]

  • SUSE Linux [07:48]

Unattended Installation in Batch Mode

For an unattended installation using a script file and the installer in batch mode, you can watch the following video. It also makes use of a Windows client with X-Ming for X-Window emulation to display the graphical installer running on the Linux server.

Installation using an Update Site

For information about how you can use an update site to distribute the latest SAP HANA studio versions in your network, you can watch the following video. This is similar to the installation as Eclipse plugin.

Over the years, for the SAP HANA Academy, SAP’s Partner Innovation Lab, and à titre personnel, I have written a little over 300 posts here for the SAP Community. Some articles only reached a few readers. Others attracted quite a few more. For your reading pleasure and convenience, here is a curated list of posts which somehow managed to pass the 10k-view mile stone and, as sign of current interest, still tickle the counters each month.
