Since 2021, SAP E-Mobility has enabled companies in multiple industries to build and run charging networks, including billing, maintenance, and energy management, to drive the transition to sustainable and convenient individual mobility.

For almost a year, SAP E-Mobility has been providing charge point operators with smart charging capabilities, including dynamic load management.

In February 2023, we included the option of using the charging vehicle data to better define power distribution and charging prioritization in the dynamic load management algorithm.

What is dynamic load management? It’s an automated and customizable solution that constantly re-adapts the power delivered to charging vehicles based on the site area’s electrical constraints and fluctuant charging context.

In the past, vehicles were unknown to the charging station management system. When an unknown vehicle requests power, it becomes a charging priority at the site area for the first few minutes, until the vehicle’s electrical properties can be estimated and used by the algorithm. During the initial charging period, the connector’s maximum power is made available to the vehicle – even if the vehicle rarely consumes all of this power – unless the initial maximum amperage has been limited.

Dynamic load management protects the site area’s electrical installation. So, if the site area is already strained when an unknown vehicle arrives, the vehicles that are already charging are deprioritized and, as a result, receive a consequently lowered power or stop charging during these first minutes. When an estimation of the charging speed is made, the unknown vehicle may or may not be deprioritized, depending on the estimation and the charging context.

As you can see, not knowing the vehicle can be a disadvantage for charging optimization.

Now, when our users select a vehicle on the badge used for charging, they provide the vehicle’s electrical properties to the dynamic load management algorithm.

These properties are used from the moment a charging session starts, and better choices are made for prioritization and power distribution. The power available for charging is, in that case, restricted to the actual vehicle’s charging speed limit. The vehicle’s state of charge – often unknown to the charging station – is estimated using actual and contextual data: the battery’s nominal capacity and the energy delivered during the charging session.

SAP E-Mobility: A Charging Session Using Dynamic Load Management

This ensures that only the power needed for charging is reserved for the known vehicle, making more power available to the rest of the fleet. And the order in which the vehicles charge is better defined, thus raising the chance of reaching a sufficient state of charge by the departure time.

Key features of Dynamic Load Management:

  • Optimized energy delivery when a site area’s power supply is limited

  • Guaranteed electrical infrastructure safety

  • Increased number of electric vehicles charging simultaneously

Make sure your site areas and charging stations are configured correctly before activating dynamic load management.

In our next blog post, we’ll discuss charging authorizations. Stay tuned!
