Please note there's an update to the SAP Build sunset blog here

Over the past three years, SAP Build has helped thousands of users design and deliver SAP Fiori applications that delight end-users and jump-start the development process.  On any given week, over 1,000 SAP Build prototypes are created and shared for end-user feedback.  We’re incredibly proud of the tremendous impact SAP Build has made to our internal and external customers. It’s with that appreciation we take this time to announce the next step in the lifecycle of SAP Build and give a glimpse of the future.

What’s happening?

SAP Build is moving into maintenance and has been retired from the SAP price list. We will continue to support SAP Build until the end of all customer contracts, so we will keep delivering bug fixes and SAPUI5 updates to the service. Existing customers can continue to use SAP Build and invite new users to participate in the prototyping and user feedback process.  Subscription customers can still purchase additional user licenses until the end of their license term.  CPEA customers will have until July 15 to activate SAP Build for their license term. Trial accounts will be allowed for the near-term, but users will be unable to upgrade to an enterprise license.

Why the change?

SAP made this decision to focus our development resources on fewer, but more strategic topics to help customers derive quicker value in creating SAP Fiori applications. We have reallocated the investments in SAP Build to an integrated set of UX tools for faster and smoother transition from Fiori design to development.  The learning we gained in creating SAP Build will carry forward.

What’s next?

To meet the goal of faster transition from Fiori design to delivery, SAP Fiori elements is receiving enhancements in performance, ease of use, and functionality. We are also introducing a new solution, SAP Fiori tools, that will combine requirements-gathering, prototyping, project generation and service and application modelling. We are planning to announce a Customer Engagement Initiative (CEI) project for customers interested in shaping the future of these capabilities.

SAP Fiori tools is currently in Beta release, and GA is planned for June 2020.  You may find more information on the blog here.

Sharing a heartfelt thanks!

SAP Build has transformed how SAP designs and delivers applications. The SAP Build service will continue to be well-maintained for users in the years to come.  We’re excited to pass the torch to the new generation of SAP UX tools and hope you will join us in our next steps.

Hi Keith,

Thank you for the update, it is very sad to hear! I'm a huge fan of build, I'm using it since the beginning.

Will SAP Fiori tools be an online tool as well?

Hello Keith and everybody reading this,

******
First of all, If you think that killing BUILD is a bad move, please like this comment.
******

I believe everyone is aware that BUILD has a cost for SAP and it's very unlikely that it had ever generated any profit. IMHO, because of three reasons:

  • The enterprise account adds little value compared with the trial account

  • The enterprise account is affordable for SAP customer (which does not mean it's cheap)

  • There was never a personal account. No individual had the chance to buy a license by clicking in a simple "Buy it here" button.

Actually, BUILD is almost 5 years old considering its first commit on GitHub. It helped many and many customer and it should be part of SAP strategy of engaging customers to adopt Fiori and use its best pratices. Clearly the strategy has changed.

Sorry to say: BAD MOVE

There was a time when BUILD had a decent update every month. BUILD is far away from being a stable prototyping tool but it still adds a lot of value to customers.

I've already signed up for SAP Fiori Tools beta program. I've never seen it yet but by reading the blog posts, it's focused on Fiori Elements.

I believe less than 5% of the prototypes I created in BUILD used a Fiori Elements template.

Please SAP, do not expect to solve all customers needs by using oData annotations. At least, consider that SAP Fiori Elements have a lot of limitations and customers are free to create unique apps. BUILD helps with needs.

I really wish SAP Fiori Tools will be a great tool but I would not imagine it would put BUILD to an end. At least now right now. It's strange how SAP seems to enjoy killing solutions because of new alpha/beta/sometimes non-existing tools which will be delivered in the future. In professional poker you don't go all-in without checking what are your cards and usually waiting for the flop.

Just to mention, SAP Web IDE is being killed by an IDE which near nobody might have access to (SAP Business Application Studio). And if it becames available for the community, the decision was already been taken so what's the point?

While all that happens Microsoft developed Visual Studio Code without killing Visual Studio.

@Keith please answer many open questions here:

  • After the end of all customer contracts, will SAP BUILD be shutdown completely of will it just stop receiving updates?

  • Assuming no one will shut down the servers, will it be possible to create new trial accounts?

  • When exactly is the end of all customer contracts (dd-MM-yyyy)

  • Will SAP Fiori Tools allow prototyping of custom UI5 apps not done with SAP Fiori Elements?

  • Will SAP Fiori Tools allow validating prototypes with something similar to studies in BUILD?

  • Will SAP Fiori Tools be publicly available with trial versions?

  • Will SAP Fiori Tools have personal accounts?

  • What will be the pricing model SAP Fiori Tools? If this is not ready, when will it be ready?

LAUNCHING CAMPAIGN:

LET'S MAKE SAP BUILD OPEN SOURCE AGAIN

Years ago the SAP community was able to convince some important folks in SAP to make SAPUI5 open source because if not it would likely be a Web Dynpro 2.0. The campaign succeeded even though some very good parts of the library are not open source.

Why not doing the same now? Please push the latest commit on the  SAP BUILD GitHub repository and if part of the community wishes it so much, then maintain it by our own hands.

I'm sure this open source version would not confict with SAP Fiori Tools, as Fiori Elements are not open source and not delivered with OpenUI5.

LET’S MAKE SAP BUILD OPEN SOURCE AGAIN

Hello Fabio,

First of all, thank you for being a passionate SAP Build user!

Your feelings reflect a lot of what we’ve heard from other SAP Build customers and our goal is to make every customer successful in their SAP Fiori implementations

There’s a lot to unpack in your response, and I’m working with others to answer your questions completely.  I just wanted to respond quickly to let you know you’ve been heard, and there’s more to come in the days ahead.

Thank you!

Keith

I will say that shutting something down because there might be a replacement one day is maybe not the best strategy in the world.

Amazingly in Australia some business were told their existing phone line would be shut on (say) 1st of January 2018 because it was compulsory to move to the NBN (national Broadband Network).

OK says the business when is the NBN available in my area?

"1st January 2019 according to current plans, might be later" was the response.

You cannot make these things up.

I am reminded of a science fiction novel where a colony ship was on its way to another planet and calculated that if they used all their fuel right now they would get there a lot faster and by the time they got near the target planet in a 100 years they would have invented something that could slow them down without fuel. The only problem was that invention never happened...
