Cloud computing makes it easier for IT to  to run and access applications, data, and services over the Internet. It spares businesses from an expensive capital investment in hardware and considerable resources on maintaining solutions.  More and more enterprises are running SAP solutions in the cloud, such as the human resources solution SAP SuccessFactors or SAP Ariba for procurement. And some SAP S/4HANA customers are also migrating to the cloud to gain the flexibility and agility that are the hallmarks of a successful business in the digital age.

However, there is also no one recipe for cloud adoption.  Companies are experimenting and adopting the cloud at different paces, and for carrying on both core business processes and developing new innovations, as they pursue a common quest for greater business agility and lower costs.  To meet different business’ goal of cloud and architecture flexibility, business needs the freedom of movement of data and queries spanning local, public, and private clouds without cloud vendor lock-in to maximize the deployment flexibility.

Moreover, in digital enterprise, the vast majority of new data will be generated outside enterprise datacenters – in the cloud and at the edge of the network - by sensors and a multitude of devices. With companies increasingly relying on data to transform their business and achieve new levels of productivity, choosing a data management strategy that include the cloud is paramount.

The new data management strategy should allow a company to

  • Retain the freedom to decide where to deploy its applications and data, which is about the flexibility of cloud option and architecture

  • Adopt the cloud at the pace dictated by the company’s unique business priorities

Data Management for Cloud Freedom

Whether you’re embarking on a modernization project for your on-premises ERP systems, planning to extend your existing business processes with new applications that run on the cloud, or moving your SAP S/4HANA projects to the cloud, you need to ensure your data management technology choices provide the flexibility for your business needs.

SAP provides you SAP HANA Data Management Suite (HDMS) that has all that is required to freely move data and applications across clouds, and between cloud and on-premises.  This is designed to give you the deployment flexibility your business needs and avoid cloud provider lock-in,  which can be binding and costly.

SAP HDMS is a multi-cloud solution that can run virtually anywhere.  For example, in addition to making SAP HANA available on SAP Data Centers, we’ve worked with Amazon Web Services (AWS) so that SAP HANA is certified and can run it seamlessly on AWS Cloud. For example, Kellogg processes 16 TB of sales data weekly to create promotions by modeling dozens of data simulations on SAP HANA running on AWS Cloud.

SAP HDMS includes software-defined cloud automation capabilities to help you operate an on-premises data center as a local cloud. With SAP HDMS, the cloud-based ERP solutions have end-to-end coverage – from system security to compliance.  Customers can not only run business applications on cloud, but can also gain more intelligence via built-in machine learning, predictive analytics, and optimized processes.

On top of this, SAP HDMS includes SAP Cloud Platform Big Data Services (formerly Altiscale), a fully-managed implementation of Hadoop and Spark in the cloud, that meets the rigorous demand for enterprise-class reliability, scalability, and security. You benefit from instant provisioning and scaling, automated operations management, and proactive support by SAP.  This is a complete, optimized Big Data environment that empowers your data scientists and analytics teams to focus on business priorities, while SAP manages the rest.

Cloud Options

SAP HANA is available in the cloud via a bring-your-own-license model, through fully managed dedicated instances on SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud, and on SAP Cloud Platform with the SAP Cloud Platform, SAP HANA service (SAP HANA-as-a-service) for projects requiring more agility. SAP HANA-as-a-service has all the power of HANA and allows customers to deploy to any major public cloud (or combination of clouds). This gives customers the ability to avoid the risks associated with vendor lock in and to take advantage of the services and development tools on the hyperscale platforms (SAP Cloud Platform, Google Cloud Platform, AWS, and Azure).

When you partner with SAP for data management and the cloud (SAP Cloud Platform, SAP HANA Enterprise Cloud, and partner clouds):

  • Your data is hosted on world-class cloud infrastructure with global teams dedicated to its safety and availability

  • Your software is automatically updated with the latest innovations and security patches.

  • New instances can be provisioned and de-provisioned on demand, delivering elastic scale to adapt to your changing workloads needs.

  • You pay only for the services you consume on an ongoing basis – without upfront capital expenditure and time-consuming procurement and installations.

Data Management for Architecture Felxiblity

Another side of the story is the complexity of business IT infrastructure.  SAP HDMS is a complete solution that can be easily customized to deliver logical architectures for different business needs. The same core and components can scale from a data mart scenario to a data lake scenario with handling streaming data, or expand it to a data cleansing scenario to clean the data during the data loading process.

SAP HDMS can give you the freedom of movement and synchronization of data, instances, and queries spanning local, private and multi-public clouds.  The architecture flexibility and the cloud flexibility enables users to meet any requirements. Moreover, SAP HANA Data Management Suite enables secure, governed, enterprise-class applications and analytics by providing an open, hybrid, and multi-cloud enabled solution suite that orchestrates all the data you need into a trusted, unified landscape.
