In a milestone year that marks its 50th anniversary, the WTA is ushering in the next generation of
data management and sports intelligence across its operations with SAP BTP. With its decade-long technology partner SAP, the WTA is embarking on a data-driven transformation to translate decades of data into holistic insights, integrated statistics, and predictive analytics.

The need to evolve for the benefit of women’s tennis and to future-proof its organization became a must: to drive faster outcomes in a more complex environment, for tournaments, players and fans.
With over fifty events and four Grand Slams, the WTA tour spans six continents and nearly 30
countries with a global audience of over 700 million. Their data analytics had become increasingly
complex and multi-layered, so releasing and connecting cross-functional data siloed in individual applications was critical. These isolated databases contained goldmines of player history, athlete health, performance, tournament trends, match information, safety, statistics, and so much more. The proficiency of SAP Business Technology Platform (SAP BTP) to convert this information into useful context, evaluate the data, and interpret the relevance to both individuals and tournaments will streamline tour operations, enhance the fan experience, and safeguard player health for the next generation of female players.

Through unique data anonymization features in SAP HANA Cloud, the WTA will be able to analyze
player data, drawing correlations and generalizations across tournament conditions and career
histories while protecting individual players’ privacy. The data consolidation will allow players to
monitor, analyze, and, where necessary, adjust their game by keeping track of their technique with
real-time data analytics. Big data influences how female athletes train and play, but the critical step is
taking that information and turning it into something WTA players can use to win.

Unifying the WTA’s data will have profound outcomes for its various stakeholders. Sports leagues,
teams, and ambassadors work with the WTA to make a difference in their organizations’ operations,
in the performance of young athletes, and in local communities they touch, by using SAP Technology
to achieve social, economic, and environmental objectives. With SAP HANA Cloud,
fans can enjoy an elevated experience of a more exciting, competitive, and technical game with real-time insights at the touch of a button. The new LIVE Match Center will be the go-to destination to view, interact with, and share data from live matches.

In leading this data transformation, the WTA raises the bar for females athletes and stakeholders regarding digital accuracy, transparency, and adaptability. The data aggregation will enable the WTA to access context-rich, tournament-critical data to shape their strategies for the future of women’s tennis. In line with their 50th-anniversary theme, Just Getting Started, SAP and the WTA are fabricating the next chapter in how women’s tennis is played, experienced, and measured from the grassroots to center court.
