SAP HANA Administration

In this blog series you will find quotes, backgrounds, suggested further readings and other information related to my latest book SAP HANA 2.0, An Introduction published by SAP Press.

Any good? Post a comment, share on social media, and/or give a like. That's how the community works. Thanks!

Quote/Unquote

Each chapter in the book starts with a quote and for the chapter about the SAP HANA administrator persona, we paraphrase Murphy's law and, more philosophically, share an observation from Winston Churchill.

If one thing goes wrong, everything else will, and at the same time.

—Peter Drucker

Drucker's take on Murphy's law "whatever can happen, will happen",
Peter F. Drucker, Management: Tasks, Responsibilities, Practices, New York: Harper & Row, 1973.

Drucker is often quoted. That is what you get when you write 39 books.

  • The best way to predict the future is to create it.

  • What gets measured gets managed

  • Management is doing things right; leadership is doing the right things.

  • There is nothing so useless as doing efficiently that which should not be done at all.

  • The most important thing in communication is to hear what isn't being said.

  • If you want something new, you have to stop doing something old

  • (...)

We shape our buildings and afterwards our buildings shape us.

-  Winston Churchill

Churchill argued to rebuilt the Commons Chamber as it was originally, rectangular with the opposing parties opposed and not semi-circular as favoured by others (see Churchill and the Commons Chamber | www.parliament.uk).

Just as the origins of "left" and "right" in politics go back to where the members of the assemblée nationale sat in the early days of the French revolution, it is remarkable that our notion of "opposition" simply goes back to the architecture of the Commons Chamber.

The same idea was later also coined as "we shape our tools, and thereafter our tools shape us”. We shape our software, and afterwards our software shapes us?

You may have seen this picture before. Sign of the times? #kidsonphones (other pictures taken that day tell a different story).

References

In the original manuscript, a long list of references to other material was included, which for space constraints and other reasons did not made it to the final book.

Linux

One area we had to trim down a bit was about Linux. Note that there is a SAP Community dedicated to this topic: SAP on Linux (Communities > Topics). Here you will find relevant links, SAP notes and knowledge base articles, and the latest blogs and Q&A.

For those a bit rusty on their Linux skills, SAP Training offers AD660 - Linux for SAP System- and SAP HANA Administrators, a 5-day training course aimed at system managers, administrators, and technical IT staff.

In October 2019, SUSE also had the privilege to provide the first openSAP partner course:

SAP Support FAQ, How-To, and Guided Answers

In the book, we cover in some detail the great resource that is the knowledge base of SAP Support, like the FAQs, How-To articles, and the Guided Answers. Unfortunately, the illustrations to highlight and showcase the topic could not be included due to the small print, so I will put them in here with a couple of links. Just a selection...

Wait, There is More

Much more! Apart from Linux and SAP Notes, in this chapter about SAP HANA administration we cover the different administration tools (command line, cockpit, studio), classic DBA topics like monitoring, backup and recovery, resource management, and system configuration; we discuss both platform and application lifecycle management, that is, installations and updates for the SAP HANA platform and for the applications powered by HANA.
