Using own product, SAP HANA, to validate and leverage the quality and capabilities of the product

The latest company reports indicate that SAP is systematically exploiting the innovation potential offered by the in-memory platform SAP HANA. Following the move by the software manufacturer last year to migrate its own SAP applications to the fast in-memory database technology, the world’s leading business commerce network from the cloud, Ariba, is now also taking this step. This is a clear sign that more than 3,0000 enterprises including SAP are enjoying the benefits of the in-memory applications from SAP running on SUSE Linux Enterprise Server.

Expansion of Cloud Business 

After acquiring Ariba in 2012, SAP wants to expand its cloud business and make the Ariba network available on the basis of SAP HANA in the future. As stated in the media by Bill McDermott, Co-CEO of SAP, over 1.5 million trading partners, who conduct transactions amounting to 500 billion US dollars per year, are expected to profit from this move. SAP’s in-memory technology will allow the trading partners to analyze transactional information, business relations, as well as data that they have made available over a 15-year period in a matter of seconds. From these reports, they can derive real-time forecasts of future risks, business opportunities, and price movements, and make faster decisions that can improve their business results and bring competitive advantages. 

Large-Scale Transformation at SAP

Even SAP itself is enjoying the benefits of its own database technology, which is why it has migrated all business-critical SAP and ERP systems to SAP HANA for its global workforce of over 65,000 employees. The results are impressive, as Helen Arnold, Senior Vice President of Business Innovation & Application Services at SAP, demonstrated to attendees at SAP TechEd 2013 in Amsterdam, using global financial processes as an example. Quarterly statement reports were accelerated by 90 percent, while core financial processes such as Group-internal account reconciliation will take place in real time in the future and offer those involved the option to eliminate errors immediately.

Confirmation also for SUSE Linux

The fact that SAP HANA generates such innovative strength in the SAP environment can also be considered by SUSE as confirmation of its own company  vision “We adapt. You succeed”. This is why SAP relied on SUSE Linux from the outset when developing the in-memory appliance by recommending and supporting this operating system for use with SAP HANA. One reason for this was certainly that SUSE Linux had long since proven itself as a best price/performance  open source platform that offers customers scalability, security, and high availability for their business-critical SAP applications.

Last week at SAPPHIRE NOW 2014, SUSE Extends Its High Availability Capabilities to SAP HANA, one of first to bring open source high availability-based capabilities to SAP HANA, via SUSE Linux Enterprise.
