This blog intends to describe the "difficulties" which you can explore when you are tying to built an integrated system landscape (something which has allways been on of SAP strengths) basing on MDG(F) and FC.

It all starts when you have SAP FC (Financial Consolidation) - formerly known as Cartesis and then BO FC - in use for your financial consolidation business and you want to synchronize your Financial Master Data like the Chart of Account etc. within SAP FC with a central point of truth like MDGF.

FC is a nice product for financial consolidation and doing a good job (compared with other consolidation solutions) but unfortunantely it is not a SAP homegrown product as has therefore no "real" integration for Master Data Synchronization - a flat file interface is available but a flat file is in my eyes no "state of the art" interface (although still quite often used).

After a long period of suffering with this painpoint SAP announced with ERP Enhancement Package 6 the application MDG_FINANCIALS_3:

"As of SAP Business Suite Foundation 7.31 (MDG_FND 731), you can use this business function to establish a governance process for financial master data.

The following new features can be used with this business function:

...

- SOA Services for Consolidation Systems

In order to harmonize the consolidation of master data for Master Data Governance for Financials

with SAP BusinessObjects Financial Consolidation, SAP BusinessObjects Planning and

Consolidation, and BI-based Business Consolidation, we have provided an outbound service to

allow you to replicate consolidation master data from MDG-F to these consolidation systems."

Ok, after more than a year waiting it seems as SAP did understood their customers. So let's use it you may think and want to start building the connection - just in order to realize that there is no inbound interface in FC available ... so more time to wait and suffer.

By the way, great coordination !

After some more time even in FC a link for an external MDGF service appears but is greyed out and without any function so far - but at least raising some hope ...

And now ... with FC Service Pack 9 this "function" is going to be removed and you will receive the following comment:

"I got confirmation from our Solution management team that - MDGF is no more part of the equation in terms of feature or bridge considered from a FC [Financial Cosolidation] standpoint."

So what is the conclusion for me as customer just investing a reasonable amount of time, effort and money in SAP's MDG product - MDG (at least F) is no longer state of the art, or what is going on in Walldorf ?
