SAP Lumira is one of the best analytical tools from SAP with its robust options to connect to various data sources and provide intuitive visualizations. SAP has taken Lumira to a step higher with their revolutionary idea on running Lumira server on top of HANA. This combination of In-Memory computing and enriched UI helps businesses to find faster and agile solutions for their business needs.

In this blog, we will explore the installation of Lumira Server on top of HANA platform.

Installation Requirements:

To install Lumira server we need the following prerequisites to be met

  • HANA system with SPS07 (or) higher along with XS Engine installed.
  • HANA user with CONTENT_ADMIN role and has Insert, Update and Select rights on _SYS_REPO schema.
  • HANA Studio and HANA client tools installed in client machine and they should correspond to the server version.

Step 1:

Download the “SAP Lumira Server” software from http://service.sap.com. The Lumira server installer is available in the following path

“Installation and Upgrades” -> “L” -> “SAP LUMIRA SERVER” -> “SAP LUMIRA SERVER 1”

Step 2:

Uncompress the downloaded ZIP file. The installer package is available within a SAR file, which can be found in the “Extracted Dir\DATA_UNITS\SAP_LUMIRA_SERVER_1\”. The SAR file is named as “LUMIRASERVER15_0.SAR” and copy it to some temp location.

Step 3:

SAR is SAP’s archive format and it cannot be uncompressed with traditional archiving tools. Please download SAPCAR utility from SAP Marketplace. We can extract all the contents of the SAR file using this utility. Invoke the SAPCAR utility in Windows command line with the parameters –xvf and location of SAPLUMIRASERVER15_0.SAR file.

SAPCAR_315-20010453.exe    –xvf SAPLUMIRASERVER15_0.SAR

SAPCAR command execution

Step 4:

Now open HANA Studio and login to HANA system with an user account that has system privilege to Import delivery units and privileges mentioned in the prerequisites section. Preferably do the import with an account that has full admin privileges. After logon go to Menu and select “File -> Import”.

Step 5:

Select the type of content to be imported in the next screen. Select “SAP HANA Content -> Delivery Unit” and click next to proceed further.

Step 6:

If you have many systems configured, select the target HANA system where Lumira server should be deployed and select next to move ahead.

Step 7:

Now we need to import the delivery unit and deploy it to the server. Please follow the steps mentioned below

  1. Under “Select File”, select the location as “Client”.
  2. Browse for the “LUMIRASERVER15.tgz” file and add its path to the “File:” column.
  3. The system will read the delivery unit and display all the available packages in the “Object Import Simulation” text-box. Now click “Finish” to trigger deployment.

Step 8:

In the Job status, the status of the import can be tracked.

Step 9:

Once the Lumira server is deployed to HANA server, the status of the import in Job Details will be changed to success.

That’s it!.. We have installed Lumira server on top of HANA. However this is still not usable. We need to do the post install configurations and role assignments. Please follow the part-2 of this blog for post install configurations and role assignments.

Happy Learning!..

This one is not clear for me: can I take any HANA installation (with SP7) in the system landscape for installing Lumira Server on top (e.g. a Datamart, or a BW on HANA)?

Hi Adam,

Yes you can use any HANA server with XS Engine running on it. Even if you have a BW on HANA implementation, the BW App server will use only one schema in HANA server. So you can use that HANA system, provided you have direct access to HANA rather than accessing it through BW.

Hi Poorvin

Really appreciate your effort to document this for all others that could highly use the help. With the release of 1.17, the HANA pre-requisite for Lumira Server and Lumira add-on to BI 4 is SP8. It will be great we could post the updated information.

Thank you!

Hi Sharon,

Sure. I will try to compile the requirements for new version and share it with the SAP community.

Thanks,

Poovin.

Technically this is true. Just be careful with the flavour of the HANA license you have. Some license types have restricted use cases.

When I get to Step 7, I see some entries that have a 'X' under status instead of a checkmark.  The tooltip says: "Repository: test import: this object would be deleted".  I proceeded anyway, but the import came back with errors.  They were mainly in the activation of some of the objects.  The import of the objects itself had no errors.  When I try to manually activiate the ones that errored, I get "xxx object not found", which tells me it may be related to the deletions I was warned about during the simulation.  Any ideas why I get the deletes?  I'm using LumiraServer19.car with HANA rev83.

HANA Rev. 83 is not supported with Lumira Server 19 as per note below.

Thanks so much Deepu!  It's always easy to assume its rev 82++ if you did not know about this note.
