Machine translation is a practical tool for organizations managing software localization at scale. However, a common challenge is that standard translation engines tend to produce generic output that doesn’t account for terminology that is specific to an organization, a brand or an industry. This means that product names, unique UI labels, and industry-specific terms often require manual correction after the initial translation, creating additional work in the post-editing phase.

To address this workflow challenge, SAP Translation Hub now offers term-aware translation as part of our Intelligent Data Reuse component. This capability is designed to incorporate your custom glossaries directly into the AI translation process, both with SAP neural machine translation as well as with our LLM-based translation provider.

How term-aware translation works

The feature operates through a straightforward mechanism:

  • Define Your terminology:
You begin by creating a multilingual file that contains terms specific to your organization, such as product names, UI labels, and industry jargon that require consistent translation.
  • Activate the glossary:
Once you have defined your terminology, you upload it to Intelligent Data Reuse in SAP Translation Hub and activate your glossary.
  • AI-translate your content leveraging your terminology:
Add your glossary ID to your API call and the approved translations will be applied.

Practical Benefits

This approach delivers several concrete advantages for your localization workflow:

  • Lower post-editing volume:
Because fewer terminology corrections are required after the AI translation is complete, you can focus on other tasks.
  • Consistent terminology:
Your approved terms will appear consistently across all translated content, reducing variation within a translation project, and across translation projects
    .
  • Predictable output:
The system applies your glossaries systematically, which makes the translation results more predictable and easier to quality-assure.
  • Faster turnaround:
With less manual correction work needed, your translation cycles can move more quickly through the post-editing phase.

Implementation Considerations

Term-aware translation works best when your glossaries are well-maintained and contain terms that are actually present in your source content. The overall effectiveness of the feature depends on how comprehensively your glossaries cover the key terminology in your materials.
