My name is Christian Lechner and I’m Product Manager for the BTP CLI as well as for the Terraform activities around SAP BTP.
I love developer experience and want to make their life as well as the life of SAP BTP administrators easier so that they can focus on what really matters when developing business applications and extension.
The title of this post already gives a hint. There is no standalone session that deals with Terraform. No need to be sad though, we managed to bring some Terraform magic into the following sessions showcasing that Terraform can help you at various scenarios that might not be obvious at a first glance:
Let’s start with the deep-dive “XP202 | How to efficiently operate your applications on SAP BTP”: this session gives more background information on the day 2 tasks when operating cloud native apps.
In this session you will get some insights on what to consider around Terraform focusing on the challenges after you have successfully deployed the infrastructure for your app. Of course, we will also discuss topics like observability and alike as central parts of day 2 operations.
While the session complements the hands-on workshop “XP265 | Master managing cloud-native applications on SAP BTP, Cloud Foundry runtime”, the hands-on session is no prerequiste for the deep dive.
The second chance to learn about Terraform is the hands-on workshop “XP263 | Advanced tools for administrators in SAP BTP”. This hands-on workshop puts the spotlight on the FinOps part of SAP BTP and the increasing options SAP BTP offers to deal with this important topic.
A perfect fit for Terraform, right 🤔? Not at a first glance. But here’s the point: provisioning and managing your account structure with Terraform can make your life much easier when it comes to FinOps as you will ensure a consistent account structure including features like labels that support you in mastering the FinOps challenges. That’s why you will learn how to set up your accounts via Terraform and how to enhance the account structure in a consistent way keeping you on the light side of the (FinOps) force.
I have the honor to share the stage with:
Other related sessions I recommend:
As mentioned before the following hands-on workshops might be of interest when working with cloud-native apps in the Cloud Floundry or Kyma runtime:
No matter if you want to start with Terraform or want to get some deeper insights on what’s up after provisioning your resources with Terraform we got you covered.
Besides the pure learning aspect keep in mind: TechEd was never about learning only but connecting and discussing with peers, so take the chance to learn with and from others on their journey with SAP BTP operations.
What are your experiences with operational tasks on SAP BTP using Terraform or the BTP CLI? Stumbled across some rough edges that you would like to discuss. Ideas how to improve the experience with Terraform or the BTP CLI?
I’d love to hear and learn from you – let’s meet at SAP TechEd 2025 and improve the SAP BTP experience together!
