Overview:

In this blog, we will explore about Analytical Queries and how standard embedded analytics coverage with option to additionally enhance with Custom Analytical Queries. This is a central object of most of the Analytical use cases in S/4HANA. Custom Analytical queries transforms and organizes raw data delivered from business document into a meaningful report. SAP S/4HANA comes with long list of pre-defined queries that are released for customer usage. However, there are always a customer specific queries to provide data to answer special questions and address specific use cases. To address this need Custom Analytical Queries are created. This extensibility feature is available in both Public / Private editions.

As shown in the above diagram, Analytical Query Provides data to:

  • KPIs.
  • Multidimensional reports
  • Sap Analytics Cloud Stories/Dashboards

Analytics specialist role is required to create these queries. Creating Analytical queries and maintaining the existing queries are the main tasks of the analytics specialist. We can create Custom Analytics Queries using Custom Analytics App in the Query design business catalogue.

Custom Analytics Queries are created based on below options:

Custom Analytical Queries

Step 1: Access the Custom Analytical Queries App in S/4HANA cloud.

Step 2: Create Custom Analytical Queries by selecting existing Data source.

As depicted in the above diagram, Once launched the custom analytical query app, we will be presented with the above screen. In the top right corner select the create button and provide the Custom query name and underlying data source. In this example we are trying to use the existing Released cube “C_ANALYZESUPRUTILZNCUBE” and build custom query on top of it. Please note the system will automatically prefix YY1 in the query names.

Step 3: Providing Necessary Information in “General” tab.

Step 4: Selecting Required fields in the custom query.

We will have to pick the required fields for the custom query from the source data source. In this case we have selected all the fields from the source. Please note the numeric values are automatically grouped under “measure structure”. The other fields are in the “Free” Section.

Step 5: Selecting Display fields for the Custom Query.

In the “Display” tab pick the required fields as shown above. Please note, for dimensions pick the Row, so that we can analyse based on that specific field. In this example we have selected “Country” as a dimension to analyse the number of contracts from country wise. You can leave rest of the dimensions in the “Free” characteristic section itself. so that – the end user can pick and choose dynamic fields based on the changing requirement.

Step 6: Selecting “Filters” for the Query

In the Last tab – “Filter” Section include the necessary filters for the result set to appear in the report. As shown above, select the appropriate radio buttons and apply the filtering criteria.  The user also can select User input values as a filtering option. In this example we have restricted the result by excluding a particular country code.

Once all the relevant fields are filtered, click save draft and publish as shown above.After Publishing, Browse the below Custom Analytical Queries list and provide the required query name and double click to access the Query and its results.

Execute the Query and the Country wise Result shown as below:

In the above screen, you will find ‘Data Analysis’, if the end user wish to see the result in the form of tabular format. ‘Graphical display’ is the one which shown above. We also have Query Technical information about this Custom Query. The details of query and underlying data source are displayed in this tab.

In general, these queries are consumed by the reporting tools (i.e. SAC Dashboard) so look and feel of the output and report will change based on the Reporting Tool.

Conclusion:

In this blog, we have discussed about accessing Analytical Queries and creating the custom analytical queries. Hope this demonstrates ‘Custom Analytical Queries’ creation process in a step-by-step manner. This SAP S/4HANA Embedded Analytics feature will greatly benefit our customers to implement the dynamic requirements of their business.
