In today's fast-paced business environment, staying connected and efficient on the go is crucial. SAP Mobile Start, our native mobile entry point, let’s you integrate business processes and content to provide users with an intuitive and powerful experience right at their fingertips. To enhance productivity and accessibility even further, SAP has expanded its capabilities with the Smartwatch Companion app, with the release of 1.6 version.

Now, over a year later with the current release at 1.12, multiple features have been added to the Smartwatch Companion. It’s time to provide you with a comprehensive overview of what the Watch Application offers. So, in this blog, we will explore the features and functionalities of the SAP Mobile Start Smartwatch Companion and see how it can bring valuable business information and workflow insights to your wrist.

How to enable the Smartwatch Companion via SAP Mobile Services?

By default, the Smartwatch Companion is disabled and needs to be activated manually by the admin. This is done similar to other options and security features via the SAP Mobile Services Cockpit for SAP Mobile Start:

  1. Access the SAP Mobile Services Cockpit for SAP Mobile Start:
In short: two steps are required. First (if not already done) you need to create a Role Collection “MobileTenantAdmin” that holds the correct MobileAdmin role and assign it to your user. Last you need to construct the Admin Cockpits URL and open it in your browser.

You can find a more detailed description on our help page Admin Cockpit Access Control.

  2. Find and activate the Smartwatch Feature Flag:

Inside the Admin Cockpit navigate to “Mobile Settings Exchange” and scroll down to the “Feature Flags” section. Within the table you will find the various feature flags offered for the SAP Mobile Start. You can find out more about them here.
To enable the Smartwatch Companion, locate the line item called “Smartwatch” and set the Slider Button in the Active Column to “On”:

    Make sure to Save afterwards.

  3. (Optional) Enable Passcode Requirement:
You might have noticed the second Watch-related feature flag SmartwatchPasscodeRequired. This is an additional security feature that can be enabled to require end-users to passcode-protect their watches before using SAP Mobile Start on their watch.

Features

Next to the standard watchOS (iOS) and Wear OS (Android) feature to receive native notifications (from SAP Mobile Start) on your wrist, the companion app for SAP Mobile Start offers additional features. At the current state of SAP Mobile Start 1.12 they can be divided into two different categories:

Complications & in-app browsing and actions for Monitoring Apps and To-Dos.

Let’s have a closer look one by one.

SAP Mobile Start Complications:

Watch complications are additional features offered as part of a watch face extending it to not only show the time. In smartwatches they are customizable UI elements that can provide a variety of information. SAP Mobile Start offers additional business-related complications to put on your watch face, so you can see insights directly from your wrist.

There’s the monitoring complication which displays info directly from monitoring tiles and 3 types of complications for To-Dos (All, High Priority, with due date):

Managing watch faces and complications is different between the operating systems and available
watches. You can learn more about complications and how to use them via:

In-App browsing for Monitoring apps and To
-Dos:

With complications only limited information is available directly via the watch face. To get more insights and even act on items you need to open the SAP Mobile Start’s watch app.

Opening the app, you will get two main screens: Monitoring and To-Dos. You can switch between them by swiping left/right. Both offer a list of either the To-Dos or Monitoring apps that are assigned to you. It looks like this:

The To-Dos screen additionally offers filter options visible at the top of the screen. With the available buttons the To-Dos can be filtered by “High-Priority”, “Due Soon” and “Quick Actions”.

While the Monitoring section is mostly for viewing the related KPIs, To-Dos can be acted on directly from the watch. If you see the 3 dots menu on a To-Do you can immediately jump into quick actions (e.g. Approve / Decline) from there. Otherwise clicking a To-Do from the list will display a details section you can scroll through for more information. Also from here you can directly take quick actions and even add comments to your decision via e.g. voice input:

Note:
Currently only supported for Wear OS it’s possible to perform a “handoff to your phone. It can be done by clicking on a monitoring tile in the Monitoring section or clicking the “Open on Phone” button within the To-Do Details view. This action will open SAP Mobile Start and even the related component (Monitoring Tile / To-Do) within the app on your phone.
