The contractual license consumption is a crucial part for gaining a comprehensive overview of your usage, adoption, and consumption patterns. Additionally to the current overview of the License Consumption a new section dedicated to License Consumption history has been introduced in Customer Insights reporting dashboard.

Accessing the License Consumption Section

You can access the section License Consumption in  ‘Customer Insights‘ dashboard  from the Entry page using the relevant 'Summary' card or by navigating to the “License Consumption” section in the Tab Menu. This section is divided into two tabs: one for current consumption and a new one for consumption history.

Understanding License Consumption History

The History of the License Consumption displays your contractual license consumption for the selected period for all measured license metrics. All metrics are categorized based on their consumption levels, allowing you to easily identify over-consumption or under-consumption:

  • Potential Over-Consumption: Usage exceeds 100% of subscriptions.
  • Potential Under-Consumption: Low consumption (< 20%).
  • Regular License Consumption: Consumption between 20% and 100%.
  • Measured Consumption Without Subscriptions.

A monthly graph illustrates the total number of license metrics with specific consumption characteristics, enabling you to quickly identify trends across all subscriptions. This helps you determine whether regular consumption is growing or if low consumption is increasing, indicating a need for improvement.

Customization and Detailed Analysis

You can filter the data by time period or select a specific Solution Area to view consumption trends for particular product groups. Clicking on a segment or line in the chart displays all metrics belonging to the selected Consumption Intensity Type for the chosen month, providing detailed information in a table format.

The table includes additional details such as the number of subscriptions for each metric, links to metric descriptions and documentation (Customer Info Sheet), and consumption measurements. You can customize the table by adding more columns using the customization wheel icon. The report date indicates when the last updated consumption data was received.

Special Cases and Visualization Options

A special case comes up when you use many metrics with yearly consumption. In this case the monthly display does not reflect the total consumption. In this case you can change the default monthly display to the consumption over the year by replacing in the graph setting the field "Report Month" by the field "Report Year".

Example:

In the monthly graph the number of the metrics with low consumption is increasing:

If you change the graph display from monthly to yearly,  the number of metrics with low consumption is decreasing.

If you know such metrics, you also can select them in the additional filters for the "Metric ID" and view them separately from the rest.

Another special case comes up when a metric is being metered per contract. In this case the same license metric could appear several times, once for each contract and it can have different consumption intensity for different contracts. This explain that sometimes you see the same metric several times in the table.

If you use the filter to display such special metrics, please note that the line diagram might not be the best graph layout to use. Switching to a stacked column chart can provide a clearer view of all values. You can easily change the graph layout to e.g. stacked column chart by clicking on the graph icon in the upper right corner.

Example:

Line Chart: Only 4 regular consumption metrics are visible for September in the graph  but there are 8 in the table. The 4 Low Consumption metrics are "behind" the 4 Regular consumption metrics in the graph.

Utilizing the License History Trend

Use the new License History trend to overlook your overall consumption, compare different product groups and solutions and analyze single metrics history.

Use the License History trend to monitor overall consumption, compare different product groups and solutions, and analyse individual metrics history.
