Some of you might have already used the conditional formatting in SAP Analytics Cloud before and you might have been a little "disappointed" because all you were able to configure were static number ranges.

As shown above, we could easily create a conditional formatting based on a measure and define the number ranges, define the color, and select a icon ...

... but the problem is that these are static and in case the granularity changes or the dimension changes, or we use a drill down then the threshold we defined becomes invalid because it does not adjust to the new scenario and the threshold values we defined are not applicable to the changed scenario.

So we need to be able to make the threshold dynamic, which is now possible in SAP Analytics Cloud.

You can now setup threshold rules, where you compare 2 measures against each other and then define the threshold values based on the percentage value.

For example, above we compare the original price with the discount value and based on the discount we configure the different threshold values.

So why is the option to configure this in a dynamic way important ?

Lets take a very simple example:

Above we can see a table with our product hierarchy and we can see the discount column leveraging the configured threshold. So on the top level of our hierarchy, all our product categories give us a red flag.

So when we then drill down to the next level...

.. we can recognize, that not all our products are in the red zone but instead we now can see the threshold values adjusting - based on the dynamic rules we defined - to the lower level in the hierarchy.

Hope you enjoy those new options.

How could you manage to change the color of the triangle? If I choose the triangle and try to change the color it switches automatically to circle and it allows me to change the color only for circles, not for triangle or square.

Hello Cristina,

when you select the icon, click on the arrow next to it, then click on More and then you can set the color.

Hi Ingo,

great blog post! I would like to add a dynamic threshold to compare with another measure, but the "measure" option is greyed out. What could be the reason for that?

Best regards, Eric

Hi Eric,

I would guess that your data source is a BW Live connection ?

if so, that option is not supported with BW Live yet.

Dear Ingo,

Any idea when this will be available for BW Live connection?

Hello Ingo,

Thanks for your blog.

I have just tried to use a threshold and compare 2 measures but unfortunaterly it doesn't work. I would appreciate if you can help me. I want to compare 2 measures.

  • Calculated measure "Proj M".
    Restricted measure "1".

If Measure "1" is greater than or equal to measure "Proj M" -> green light.

If Measure "1" is less than measure "Proj M" -> green light.

I have created a threshold and it is activated but SAC doesn't show colours.

Thanks in advance.

Miquel

Hi Ingo,

Is this functionality available for Live S/4 hana connection - measure was greyed out.  I wanted to achieve a scenario wherein a measure of this year should compare with previous and if greater - will be green. How can i achieve this?

Thanks

Hello Amritha,

you would have to check on the latest supported elements from SAC for the S/4 Connection in the online help to see if it is supported

Hi Ingo,

Thanks for post, I have one question though, is it possible to take threshold percentages as dynamic from a dimension as currently they ll have to be set as static percentages.

Thanks again.

I have the same question. We need an option to make threshold percentages variable as well as the labels in the legend and chart

Just to add - 02.2022 and it's still unavailable. The status is For Long-term Consideration.

is it possible to compare the measure 1 against another measure 2 with numerical range

+5 or -5 ranges not in percent value range.

Ex:  Measure 1  is 40

Measure 2 is  38.20 now this falls under -5 to 0 ranges

Hi Ingo,

Thank you for your article. I got here because I am trying to create a dynamic conditional formating for all line items that make-up a P&L statement by comparing 2 measures. My expected output is simply to display all 'actual' values that have exceeded the 'plan' values. ie. [Actual > Plan]; The values to be displayed in Red.

I have defined a threshold using the Measure option instead of Number Range and selected a restricted measure which I defined based on the planned data for comparison. SAC still requires me to define a range and this may not be practical in this dynamic scenario.

How do you propose that I resolve this?
