In the rapidly evolving world of business, change is not just inevitable — it’s essential. Understanding why change is crucial and how different people react to it can significantly impact the success of any business transformation initiative. At SAP Signavio, we recognize the diverse responses to change — some individuals are resilient, while others relish being at the forefront of innovation. This diversity of thought and attitude is what drives our community to new heights.
Our recent SAP Signavio Community activities demonstrate that bringing together diverse perspectives to foster a culture of transformation is the key to success. Let me walk you through some of the great activities that took place in July and how you can engage with them.
The Power of Change
Change is the driving force behind growth and innovation. It challenges the status quo, fosters creativity, and pushes us to explore new possibilities. For businesses, embracing change means staying competitive and relevant in a dynamic market. However, the success of any change initiative hinges on the engagement and participation of all employees.
Bringing Process Management to Life Through Employee Engagement
We recently hosted our first SAP Signavio Community Expert Session, "Bringing Process Management to Life Through Employee Engagement." This session was led by Florian Sturm, Engagement Lead at SAP Signavio. With many years of experience in process management and a strong background in how to engage and inspire employees in process management, Florian shared valuable insights from his years on the customer side. As such, he highlighted the importance of engaging employees at all levels to breathe life into process management and maintain it consistently.
What truly stood out were the powerful discussions that took place. Peers connected with each other, sharing their experiences and insights. These conversations enriched the session, offering diverse perspectives and fostering a collaborative learning environment.

SAP Signavio Customer Community Tour: Munich Stop
Following the expert session, we had the pleasure of conducting the second workshop of our SAP Signavio Customer Community Tour, this time in Munich. This workshop focused on change management and organizational governance. With a select group of eleven customers, we delved into best practices, success stories, and lessons learned from past failures.
The keynote speaker, with a compelling talk titled "Catalyzing Transformation: Engaging All Employees Through Effective Change Management in Business Process Management Initiatives," set the tone for the workshop.
During this workshop, we collected all current challenges faced by our customers and categorized them into five expert discussion topics or roundtable topics:
These topics were the foundation for developing solutions tailored to our community's specific needs and concerns. An example of a key discussion point was identifying incentives that can be applied to sustain a BPM initiative or business transformation. Starting such initiatives can be challenging, but maintaining momentum and staying committed is often the most difficult part. If you do not know how to start with your BPM initiative or business transformation, just have a look at our recent blog post by my esteemed colleagues Taryn, also a strong BPM evangelist.
These kinds of workshops are invaluable for sharing successes, addressing current challenges, and collaboratively brainstorming solutions. Our customers' active participation and contributions have been instrumental in making these sessions a success.
Navigating Change: Insights from Our Change Management Workshop
During our workshop in Munich, we explored the complexities of transformation within organizations, emphasizing the importance of understanding how people respond to change. A comic shared during the session vividly illustrated typical reactions, shedding light on the challenges and strategies needed for successful change management.
Panel 1: The leader asks, "Who wants change?" The crowd eagerly raises their hands, signaling their desire for improvement and progress. This panel represents the Comfort Zone, where people feel safe and hopeful about potential benefits without yet having to take any action. It’s easy for individuals to support change when it remains an abstract idea that doesn’t require them to move out of their comfort zone.
Panel 2: The leader then asks, "Who wants to change?" This time, the enthusiasm wanes, and fewer hands are raised. This panel signifies the transition from the Comfort Zone to the Stretch Zone. Here, people begin to realize that change involves personal effort and adjustment, which can cause discomfort. The hesitation reflects the initial resistance as individuals weigh the personal cost and effort required to change their behaviors or routines.
Panel 3: Finally, the leader inquires, "Who wants to lead the change?" At this point, the crowd disperses, highlighting the reluctance many feel towards taking on the responsibility and challenges associated with driving change. This reaction aligns with the Panic Zone, where the fear of failure, exposure, or overwhelming responsibility leads individuals to retreat. Leading change demands stepping far beyond one’s comfort zone, often into unfamiliar and daunting territory.
Understanding the Zones: Comfort, Stretch, and Panic
Our workshop focused e.g. on how to manage these zones effectively to foster a successful transformation:
Key Challenges and Solutions
To navigate these zones effectively, we identified five main challenges and devised solutions in the workshop:
Ensuring Successful Transformation
To ensure a successful transformation, it's essential to act strategically:
By understanding and managing the comfort, stretch, and panic zones, we can lead successful transformations that achieve desired outcomes and foster a resilient and adaptable organizational culture.
