DTV Essentials: Key details that you should know – Part 1

DTV Essentials: Key details that you should know – Part 2

We are now in the converted S/4 system, and we are finally able to compare the data from ECC and S/4 systems. This is a vital step as it enables us to evaluate the data across both systems. This comparison can show any similarities or discrepancies and will help you to determine if the System conversion or Upgrade was successful. Before we give the thumbs up to start using the new S/4HANA system, double-check and make sure all the data was migrated correctly and matches 100%. Once everything checks out, we can open the system for postings.

In part three of this series, the last one, I will share with you some useful information about Step 8 - Evaluate Data remarks made within the scope of my recent DTV project.

Ensure all necessary notes are installed in your S/4HANA system before starting the DTV tool. For instance, the below note was a requirement in my S/4HANA 2023 system:

3387592-DTV 1.4 Corrections (SAP S/4HANA 2023 Release)

Step 8 - Evaluate Data

Step 8 performs a detailed analysis, comparing the stored report data extracted from the source system (from ECC in the case of my conversion project) and the new S/4HANA target system.  This step provides an understanding of any fundamental differences and similarities between the “before” and “after” data extraction.

Before we execute Step 8, we must confirm the successful execution of Step 6—Simulation and Step 7—Execute Data for the S/4HANA system. For a complete explanation of the previous steps' executions and functionalities, please refer to the Business data reconciliation using DTV tool—SAP Community blog post.

Once those steps are confirmed, go to the Data Evaluation screen and double-click the flag  icon  in order to see the results.

This section presents an overview of the report's extraction and evaluation status. Click on the Results tab to view more details.

DTV sorts the data evaluation results into various categories (identified by parameters – such as EQUAL, DIFFERENCE, MISSING, UNEXPECTED, etc.).  DTV groups all records into one of these four parameter categories. The Results tab show the parameters count from the data comparison.  You can also drill down into the  conversion results.  Below, you'll find each parameter explained, along with an example.

Equal This parameter identifies records that were found exactly matching in both the source and target system.

Difference:This parameter identifies records that exited in both the source and target systems, but were not found to be equal in value.

Missing in Target:This parameter identifies records that are missing in the target system but are present in the source system.

Unexpected in target: This parameter identifies records that were found in target system but were not present in source system.

All Data Evaluation results not associated with the EQUAL parameter should be investigated by your project teams to determine if the differences identified are relevant to business operations.  If the differences are small or from several years ago the conclusion may be to ignore then.   In some cases, however, the DTV evaluation results may require adjustments or data corrections and therefore time to make these corrections should be factored into your overall project plan.

Conclusion

In summary, Data Transition Validation (DTV) is a tool available for SAP S/4HANA conversion and upgrade projects. The tool can help organize and automate data collection (before and after conversion/upgrade).   DTV eliminates the manual reconciliation efforts by automatically determining if the values in the ERP system (before) and S/4HANA systems (after) align and match.  Only after data validation is certified and determined to be accurate and complete should the conversion/upgrade project be confidently re-opened to the business user community.
