Data Engineering is the Future - the Rise of the Data Engineer

You might have received an email from SAP Learning informing you that your C_HANAIMP_XX or C_HCMOD_XX certification has been retired, or you found this information on the SAP Certification Transformation | SAP Learning page.

Both channels provide the correct information. In this BLOG it will explain the why and the future for the SAP HANA certifications.

 

Why the change?

There are two main reasons for the retirement of C_HANAIMP and C_HCMOD.

  • SAP has transformed itself into a cloud company in recent years. This cloud vision is not reflected in the C_HANAIMP certification, because this certification is based on an on-premises product. The C_HCMOD would fit perfectly into the cloud vision, however, the accompanying learning material is only focusing on modelling, the data provisioning area isn’t touched.
  • SAP Learning's certification strategy has changed from product-based to role-based certifications. The C_HANAIMP_XX and C_HCMOD are product-based certification.

To meet the cloud and role-based strategy of SAP, I decided to break with the old, retiring C_HANAIMP and C_HCMOD, and move forward to something new. The new certification C_HAMOD - SAP Certified Associate - Data Engineer - SAP HANA is role-based and reflects the SAP cloud strategy. We made sure that all the shared modeling topics from the courses HA300 – SAP HANA Modeling, the SAP Learning Journey HC300 – SAP HANA Cloud Modeling were merged, and the new SAP Learning Journey HAHC55 – Provisioning Data to SAP HANA was added.

All the mentioned SAP Learning Journeys are available, for free, on learning.sap.com to everyone interested in the SAP HANA knowledge.

 

The C_HAMOD Topics

When you start studying for the C_HAMOD_2404 the following SAP Learning Journeys are important:

A Data Engineer - SAP HANA needs thorough knowledge of Modeling on SAP HANA. Data modeling in SAP HANA Cloud is very similar to data modeling on SAP HANA. This means that when you already have the HA300 knowledge, this would be sufficient and skimming through the HC300 would be a great refresher for the certification. If you have no prior data modeling knowledge in SAP HANA, you only need to study the learning journey HC300 - Developing Data Models with SAP HANA Cloud.

In today's world, as a Data Engineer, you also need to know how to provision data to SAP HANA. The knowledge on how to do this is available in the learning journey HAHC55 – Provisioning Data to SAP HANA.

Another change is version numbering. The certification C_HAMOD now has the YYMM version numbering. The C_HAMOD became available in April 2024, so the name of the current certification is thus C_HAMOD_2404. Next April, the C_HAMOD_2504 will be released.

 

Do I need to recertify myself?

The short answer: No

The long answer: The holders of a C_HANAIMP_15 to C_HANAIMP_18 certification will be automatically migrated to the Stay Certified program and will receive the new certification C_HAMOD - SAP Certified Associate - Database Administrator - SAP HANA. No further action needed.

The same is true for the holders of a C_HCMOD_XX certification, you will also receive the new certification C_HAMOD - SAP Certified Associate - Database Administrator - SAP HANA.

If you hold a C_HANAIMP_XX and a C_HCMOD_XX certification, then of course you only once get the C_HAMOD certification.

 

The Stay Certified program

On the 2nd of April 2024 SAP Learning launched the Stay Certified program. The new SAP Certification program makes it easier and faster for you to gain and maintain the latest skills and valid credentials on the key SAP technologies and solutions for your job.

In the Stay Certified program, you only need to pass the C_HAMOD certification once to become a certified database administrator. After passing the exam, you can renew the certification every year by passing the Stay Certified Assessment questions. The assessment questions are based on the Stay Certified material made available each year.

The Stay Certified program offers you the opportunity to keep your certification up to date by answering questions on new SAP HANA topics each year via the Stay Certified assessment.

The Stay Certified program is SAP Learning answer to the frequently expressed desire from the learners to offer delta courses and delta certifications.
