During my tenure as a data practitioner, I often preferred my own database to produce mission-critical calculations. The journey of such an analysis usually began with a single purpose, like informing a business process manager or a change of parameters to optimize a back-end process. Regardless of the original scope, the need to operationalize the logic often followed.

Moonlighting as a DBA was nice, admittedly, because I could manage my databases with minimal process obstacles . However, the time lost searching documentation and stuck in trial-error loops of administrative commands only increased the delivery pressure, as deadlines are often unforgiving. I very quickly learned that while I was certainly capable of performing a dual role, I could not be great at both. The expectations of my job demanded data analysis excellence, while I desperately sought after administrative competency.
