What is a treemap and what can it be used for? Originally developed by Ben Shneiderman, in order to represent a large number of hierarchical data in the smallest possible space, the treemap dispenses completely with the known tree-like structure with nodes. Instead, the hierarchy is represented by nested rectangles: The size of the rectangles constitutes the first measure, while the color of the rectangle represents the second indicator value.
