Tracking of CO2 emissions in SAP

Dear experts,

My company would like to track CO2 emissions, focussing specially in the transport of goods to the customers and the transport of goods from the vendors. Searching in forums I have found that there is Carbon Impact module. There is no much information in the web, but It seems that functionality is specially releated to production and factory processes.

Does this module offer as well a tracking of CO2 emissions releated to transport?

Many thanks,

NachoSD

Hi,

You can track Scope1, Scope2 and Scope3 emissions( ur supply chain) where-in you can track emissions CO2 emissions from transport. There are also lot of Activity types which can be configured and modeled to your requirement.

Dear Raghu,

Many thanks for your helpful answer. I see that with CI the supply chain activities can be tracked, including transport to customers or from vendors. In case we don't implement CI and we implement 'EHS - Environment Compliance', can we also get this functionality?

As far as I have seen in forums, EC and CI are similar, difference is:

CI - focused on helping companies to track their carbon emissions

EC - focused on helping companies to meet the regulatory compliance

The information I have found about "EHS - EC" is that we can "Track, measure and monitor emissions and pollutant discharges by plant, equipment or production process". It seems more focused to processes inside plants... Can we also track transport to customers or from vendors?

Thanks,

Nacho

Hi Nacho,

I am not an expert in sustainability but for the sales documents one could imagine a statistical condition type a bit comparable to the cost condistion VPRS. This condition type could for example be calculated based on the destination or distance of transport.

I presume the same could apply for purchase orders.

Hoping this cna help.

Best regards

Hi - We got to use Carbon Impact at Tech Ed and InnoJam this year, Benjamin Wesson is the man you need to contact, you can also find information on it here:

I hope this helps

Hello All,

Seems like I have similar challenge here.

I am currently looking for simple solution - as I have already CO2 emission calculated.  - any hints which field in material master I could use to store data of kg of CO2 generated?

We would like to srore Co2 emission in one most peferably global field where fixed value of calculated emision per 1kg of the product will be stored. We have it supported by another tool, moreover in many cases we have them provided from suppliers.

I have tried to change label of dield in MARA, that we will never ue, but it is not possible for SAP default tables. I would also like to avoid creating custom field in existing data model.

thank you in advance for the advises,

BR,

Julia

Hello Julia,

I assume you refer to CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) as a unit for GHG emissions and not to CO2 as one of the GHGases.

A quick and dirty solution may be to create a characteristic in the MM classification (001). I’m not sure if this will satisfy your sustainability team. Providing CO2e values exclusively is only sufficient for simplified reporting, internal monitoring, benchmarking, or supply chain communication.

Some regulations (e.g., the EU Green Deal, the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), and the U.S. SEC climate disclosure rules) require reporting specific gases separately, and the GHG Protocol encourages detailed tracking of emissions per gas.

CO₂e values depend on Global Warming Potential (GWP) factors, which can change over time. Storing the original gas breakdown allows recalculations if updated GWP values support more accurate carbon accounting. However, it is also insufficient if you are in specific industries like agriculture and food, manufacturing, or refrigeration.

Another more sophisticated method is Specification Management, where complex property trees can build relationships and document dependencies.  This probably only makes sense if your organization uses SAP PLM or EHS. I would not activate Spec Mgmt only for the carbon footprint.

SAP provides several areas where it has already incorporated the carbon footprint. Procurement, for example, can already ask for the detailed carbon footprint of a material in the purchase requisition to make a purchase decision. I’m sure you know SAP’s sustainability solutions around corporate and product carbon footprint calculation processes, which should also be considered.

Let me know if this has helped.

One last thing—SAP uses the PACT standard to exchange carbon information. If you build a classification system for the material master, I suggest using PACT 2.0 as a template. Your sustainability team will thank you.

Thank you, ‘Boogie81’, for posting and pointing out that SFM can post calculated footprints into S/4, other SAP applications, and non-SAP systems. However, this does not address Julie’s question. The footprint in her scenario is already known, and she wants to manage it as a material attribute in SAP ERP.

Your link has triggered another thought worthy of investigation. S/4 2021 and younger provides a Sustainability Integration Component (Scope Item: 5IM—product Footprint Management) that enables the integration of product footprints into purchase requisitions. It should be possible to leverage the Key User Extensibility to access the Sustainability Integration Component for this purpose.

The component is documented here.

What I meant is - put CF data to SFM (flat file or other possible integration) and integrate it with ERP like with S/4 here (I. knoowe there might be some differences but with Integration Suite on BTP should not be a problem -->  https://help.sap.com/docs/sustainability-footprint-management/integration-guide-ebb022d8ed1d462a9379...

This video more or less shows this process between SFM and S/4HANA PR.  https://sapvideo.cfapps.eu10-004.hana.ondemand.com/?entry_id=1_cg6vmdjv
