Global demand for shea nuts is strong because they are the source of shea butter, which is widely used as a base for cosmetics and beauty products. Shea butter is sometimes referred to as "women's gold" both because of its color and because it provides employment and income for millions of African women. Although the global beauty industry is booming not all cosmetics companies give due consideration to the well-being of the women who work in their supply chains. For many of them, picking and processing shea nuts is the only means of survival for themselves and their families.
In an attempt to improve the living conditions of the women shea nut farmers in northern Ghana and to make the shea supply chain more transparent and efficient,SAP teamed up with French NGO PlaNet Finance in 2009 to launch the StarShea Network. The project began with one, ambitious aim: to use information technology, education, and microfinance to enhance the quality of life enjoyed by the people of Ghana.
