I am excited to be a part of the second SAP Social Sabbatical.Our talented, international group of 12 converged and met face-to-face for the first time a week ago, here in Porto Alegre, Brazil. We all had an intense first week getting to know each other, our clients, and our projects then jumping right in to start working on those projects. Even though technically, the SAP Social Sabbatical can be called a "month of service" in and of itself, we wanted to reach out and do more as SAP engages in its third annual global Month of Service.
Yesterday was Children's Day here in Brazil. What better way to celebrate the day than by volunteering at a children's center? We were fortunate enough to have been connected with Aldeia da Fraternidade (Village of Brotherhood), where over 300 at-risk children come for help and support. When we were introduced to the president of the center, he told us that he believed "As citizens, we are profoundly responsible for all of society of the world," (Daltro, president of Aldiera) -- and we could not have agreed more. The welcome sign that hangs at the entrance reads "Ben Vindo. Aqui somos todos educadores" (Welcome. Here we are all teachers.)
The children's activity rooms were badly in need of some loving care and some fresh paint. We spent the morning giving two of the rooms a couple of coats of paint to give them a fresh, clean look.
In the spirit of the SAP Month of Service, we came together "to help the world run better and improve people's lives" in a way that also celebrated our local host's Children's Day. While it was hot and a bit tiring, we all left Aldeia with a renewed spirit and a feeling of pride and accomplishment in being able to offer our helping hands.
