Why is the 'Carrier' field in Transportation Unit (TU) not editable?

I can only fill this 'carrier' field when creating a new TU but once saved, it cannot be edited, even if left blank at creation. This field reads the Business Partner table and displays all BP’s that are setup as type Carrier. As part of my outbound process, I need to change a TU before posting Goods Issue and populate this field with the relevant 'carrier/transporter' which is only known at the time of docking the vehicle to the door for loading.

Response from SAP:

"The external identification of a TU is the external number together with the carrier - so it's a logical key field and such cannot be changed.
This is the technical definition. A external TU number with carrier must be unique for one internal TU-number.
You can create several TU's with same external identification and different carriers."

My alternate solution is now to create a new TU Identification Type called "Transporter" and capture this in the TU header. It is a free-text field which is not ideal but will have to do for now.
