Temperature condition limitations in warehousing

Dear all,

Current situation: We have set up different storage types for cold storage and ambient storage. We have storage sections for every type of material (raw, intermediate, finished, packaging,...). We have maintained temperature conditions in the material masterdata (cold or ambient).

Problem: In our current setup SAP will allways suggest a cool storage type (based on the putaway parameters in masterdata wm), however it is still possible to place a product that has to be stored in a cold place, in the storage type we reserved for ambient products. We want it not to be possible to place a cold storage product in certain storage types (reserved for ambient).

Is there a link between temperature condition in masterdata and warehousing or is this only an informative field? Is storage conditions the answer or is this only relevant for deliveries/shipping?

I have come to think the solution is to create different storage sections for material type, including cold/ambient. For example, we have now storage section "RAW", we should create "RWC (raw cold) and RWA (raw ambient)" and allow RWC only in the cold storage type. But is there a more straightforward way to do this?
Is there some parameter for storage type customizing that will check for temperature conditions in the masterdata for the material.

Custom programming is also a possible solution as we could say when creating a transfer order to a certain storage type to check for temperature conditions but i would prefer masterdata/customizing setup.

What is your opinion/experience on this issue?

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

using storage sections is (as I can see it) the only option which allows you to control that someone does not change the destination to somewhere you do not want to store it to. In general a storage type has no limitations (only if using hazardous materials you can do a check on storage type level).

"In our current setup SAP will allways suggest a cool storage type (based on the putaway parameters in masterdata wm), however it is still possible to place a product that has to be stored in a cold place, in the storage type we reserved for ambient products. We want it not to be possible to place a cold storage product in certain storage types (reserved for ambient)."

Yes, if you allow the user to change the destination bin, he can select a bin in another storage type. The system will find the "correct" type according a putaway control indicator, but will not enforce this storage type.

"I have come to think the solution is to create different storage sections for material type, including cold/ambient. "

Using storage sections you can activate a "storage section check" (together with the storage section determination). This check does not allow that a user changes the section to something which is not allowed. So this you need to define and use storage section indicators and set up the determination accordingly.

"Is there a link between temperature condition in masterdata and warehousing or is this only an informative field?"

Where do you maintain temperature conditions? I don't know this field (but might be that I simply missed that, never had use for it).

"Is storage conditions the answer or is this only relevant for deliveries/shipping?"

The field storage conditions in the material master is used for the storage location determination in the ERP delivery, for nothing else (in the standard).

The best field with regards to EWM would be the "Warehouse Storage Condition". The field itself does NOT control anything. But then you can use what Alexander Pozhidaev described, slotting to set either the putaway control indicator or the section indicator by using this information.

"Is there some parameter for storage type customizing that will check for temperature conditions in the masterdata for the material."

No, nothing in the standard is using this.

All the above is no official SAP statement.

And it is EWM. NOT eWM - Duh!

And if your question includes the word "transfer order" - do NOT tag the question with Extended Warehouse Management!

hi Inne, storage section sounds as a good solution for this.

Hello!

I think it would be better if you created 2 PACI: for cold and ambient storage type and customized "Storage Type Search Sequence for Putaway" for it. In product master data you should set these PACI to products accordingly.

Storage Condition you can use in slotting, for example, to automatic determination PACI for the materials.
