Source and Target Prefix

When creating a new Planning Area, usually with the option "create new with dependencies", it asks for Source prefix which is usually greyed out as "IBP" and Target Prefix.

Now what is this Target Prefix? is it like a code to the MDT which links the PA to a certain MD?

Hi Andrew,

The create new with dependencies (formerly known as advanced copy: create new) copy option creates an exact copy of the source planning area with a new ID and copies the master data types and the time profile of the planning area as well. The create new with dependencies option allows you to copy the attributes, the master data types, and the time profile associated with a planning area.

When you copy a planning area using create new with dependencies, you have the following options for copying the master data types in the planning area:

  • Copy the source master data type “as is - "IBPPRODUCT" (Standard planning area)
  • Replace the existing prefix in the master data type ID with a target one "ZDLPRODUCT"

SAP recommends that you define a two-letter or three-letter prefix for the IDs of the master data types; for example, ABC or XYZ (as in ABCPRODUCT or XYZPRODUCT or ZDLPRODUCT). One suggestion could be to use your company's ticker symbol as a prefix. The sample planning areas delivered with SAP Integrated Business Planning use the IBP prefix in the master data type IDs.

Example:

You copied standard planning area IBPSAP1 with advanced copy option to ZDLSAP1 that means all master data types copied as "ZDL". Later if you would copy PA ZDLSAP1 then again two options simple and advanced if you go with simple copy same master data types ZDLSAP1 copied or advanced copy again new master data type prefix to be updated like "ZDB".

so basically it is way to say this PA is for that specific master data?

so if i upload master data for example with prefix J1A, i should put that same prefix in the PA to link both?

You are correct. If you create prefix J1A then all master data types and data associated with that PA.

The prefix will replace the IBP in the name of the master data type. Example: If your chosen prefix is AS1, the master data type IBPLOCATION from the template will be created as AS1LOCATION. But the attributes that are part of the master data type IBPLOCATION will be exactly the same than for AS1LOCATION. The master data are then saved within your AS1LOCATION.

When you later on make a copy of your new planning area, and you choose simple copy, the master data type remain the same and you use the same data content of AS1LOCATION. But if you do another advanced copy and choose a new prefix AS2, the mater data are completely decoupled
