SAP Transportation Management Messaging (embedded TM vs EDI)

Hello Experts,

short Question(s): ‎

#edi ‎#embeddedTM Only to be 110% sure.

1) Do I understand that right, that I would need some Middleware (PI?) if a Customer is working today still with EDI and uses Messages like:

ORDERS = Purchase Orders
ORDERSP = Purchase order confirmation/update
IFTMBF = Transport Booking Request
IFTMBF - ITM = Consignment Plan
IFTMBC = Transport Booking Confirmation
IFTMBC 1 - ITM = Consignment plan acknowledgement
IFTMBC 2 I- ITM = shipment details
DESADV = Dispatch Advice INVOIC = Invoice

2) embedded SAP TM inside S/4HANA 1909 is not capable of EDI. Only knows XML Webservice Messages such as

TransportationOrderRequest_Out
TransportationOrderRequest_In
TransportationRequestConfirmation_Out
TransportationRequestConfirmation_In

to send/receive/confirm truck capacity.

3) What equivalents fulfil the other EDI Messages in embedded TM?

4) So the customer also needs TM or a Middleware is being used like SAP PI to map the fileds, right?
