When I create a control cycle entry with staging method 5 = EWM the System expects that both the storage location of the PSA and the source storage location are the same. I do not understand why. I'm lacking any function reasoning behind this.
The problem I'm facing hereby at my current client is the following.
Their products which go to production can also be sold to customers at the same time. So of course they have the requirement to separate stocks on PSAs from stock that is sellable to customers else sales orders may use PSA stock to be confirmed. Hence they assign a separate PSA storage Location to the PSAs and when the staging is happening, stock is posted from the AFS storage location to the PSA storage Location. All good so far. The issue is only, as the source storage location is the same as the PSA storage location, that whenever a production order is entered and released I get the message that the components are not available because system checks in the source storage Location of the Control cycle and it says it's the PSA where of Course there is no stock!
Therefore I don't understand why SAP requires to have the PSA storage location and the source storage Location to be the same in the control cycle. Is there any technical reason?
Thanks for any answers.

Hello Stefan,
You can use separate storage locations in EWM. The control is done via the stock category of the storage type. Depending on the settings for the storage type, the stock category flips when the warehouse task to the production supply is confirmed. We, the development team, decided to stick to this option to control the storage location (including the stock type) instead of having an additional option in the control cycle. If there is more than option they might contradict and make the situation confusing.

Katrin

Hello Katrin
What is reason to allow different storage locations in case of pick parts for example? If staging indicator is pick parts, then I can have source storage location as AFS and destination storage location (storage location of PSA) as PSWM for example.
In the case of EWM staging indicator , we are bound to have same storage location as source as well as destination. What is the technical reason behind this? We could have also kept this same as pick parts. Is the restriction kept because of some technical restriction with PMR process?

Hello Stefan
You may refer below blog

Even if we have 2 separate storage location, one for AFS one for production . System would work fine.
ATP check should be defined at plan level.

Hi Stefan Laukemper,
My Understanding: Whole Production Process should be manage in a unique storage location for better clarity and visibility in the System(Staging and Consumption post in that Storage location ).
Your Case: You should keep PSA Storage Location in Contol Cycle.
Staging: Cross-order staging
"that whenever a production order is entered and released I get the message that the components are not available because system checks in the source storage Location of the Control cycle and it says it's the PSA where of Course there is no stock!"
-> If no stock, then it should stage and refill from AFS Storage Location so create picking Strategy in EWM
-> Create Picking and Putaway Strategy for replenish the stocks from AFS storage location to the PSA storage Location
Please let us know if you have further questions.

Hi Shailesh,
thanks for your very elaborate answer 🙂

But this is exactly my problem because SAP doesn't allow this! You can't have two different storage locations as source and destination when using staging method = 5. I was interested in a reason why is that because I can't think of any.
I'm currently trying to Setup this process using staging method = 3 and that would generate a posting change delivery in EWM as this is what I found is the recommended solution if you need source and destination storage location both EWM managed.

Hello Stefan,Hi Shailesh,
I tested with stage method 5 successfully.
Even in ERP PAS the destination location and source location is the same, the WT can be generated cross stock type/ location with "Stock Determination" customizing.
you can try it.

Hello Setfan,
There are multiple questions in your question, so, I reply one by one.
Question: When I create a control cycle entry with staging method 5 = EWM the System expects that both the storage location of the PSA and the source storage location are the same. I do not understand why. I'm lacking any function reasoning behind this.
Answer: This happens when you have 1 EWM managed storage location both for your Warehouse and Production supply area. It means your plant is connected with 1 EWM sloc and same replication in EWM with Warehouse having 1 availability group 002 in case of AFS.
Also, your PSA is created with default 1 Sloc, example AFS

In case, of PSA created with 1 sloc, that is defaulted in Control cycle LPK1. So, you have this issue.

Had it been 2 EWM managed storage location, 1 for warehouse, say ZAFS and 1 for PSA as PL01, in that you need to create 2 Availability group in EWM.
So, the equation could be been like this.
Plant+ ZAFS= W001+ 002
Plant+PL01= W001+003
In that case,if you create PSA(PK05) with production storage location PL01, then you will source as AFS and destination storage location PL01 in control cycle.

Answer: Yes, this could seriously create troubles at time of delivery creation agasint customer sales order because ERP delivery can pick stock even from PSA which is conected to AFS storage location. This happens to ATP check via Storage location determination of delivery document.
Best solution to this problem could be using 2 separation storage location and ATP check and Storage location determination to be conducted for ERP delivery document will always pick AFS storage location which is connected to Availability group 002( Stock in Bin).
Same applies for production order.
Please check some ATP SAP notes.
SAP note 1893237, 1513607
PS: I dont know why SAP standard document for Advance production Integration, Staging Via PMRs, SAP has mentioned usage of single storage location both for Warehouse and PSA as AFS. This can seriously create ATP issues undoubtedly.
I checked few SAP standard documents and links and found that SAP has suggested separate storage location for production in Delivery based and even in Advance production Integration.
Here is the link.
