Moving storage location from EWM to IM

We have a scenario where a storage location is configured for EWM but we want to remove that storage location from being EWM managed and have it set back to IM. Wondering if someone could provide the steps or best practices to follow to do this.

Hi all,

I do not want to sound too smart, but it is worth noting that any stock not removed from the storage location before cutting the link will still be there in EWM in the stock type (once linked to the storage location) - not what you would want to see, I assume.

Definitely not. So would best practice be to transfer stock from EWM sloc to IM sloc and transfer it back after cutting the link?

Hi Scott,

I think I still have not fully understood what you want to achieve in the end, but let's see.

Let's say you start with stock in an EWM managed storage location (e.g. 1000 and EWM stock type 10) and you want to have that stock in an IM-only managed storage location with the same number (i.e. 1000).

Firstly, you would have to clear all the stock from 1000.

  • Option 1: Use /SCWM/ADGI to move the stock from EWM to a (new and temporary) IM-only managed storage location (an "old and permanent" SLOC will do, too, of course, but it should be empty not to get confused with stock that's already in there).
  • Option 2: Use /SCWM/POST to move the stock from stock type 10 (in my example) to (new and temporary) stock type that is not linked to storage location 1000 (here also "old and permanent" is working, too).

Secondly, cut the link as described before

Thirdly, move stock back to 1000 (which is not linked to EWM anymore)

  • If you have used option 1 above you use MIGO now to move the stock from the temporary storage location to 1000
  • If you have used option 2 above you use /SCWM/ADGI to move stock from EWM to storage location 1000

Whether you use option 1 or 2 is mostly a matter of taste.

Another thought to take into consideration: will the section of the warehouse (e.g. racks, bins etc.) remain managed by EWM? If so "clearing the storage location" also means moving the stock physically to some area "outside" of EWM. If not, you need to delete or least block the storage bins in EWM.

Hello scottcarricknwn

The link between a storage location and EWM is through the storage location assignment to a warehouse number - IMG node Enterprise Structure -> Assignment -> Logistics Execution -> Assign Warehouse Number to Plant and Storage Location

Remove that link and the storage location will not be managed in EWM anymore. Of course all the data related to the storage location will stay in EWM.

Best regards

Thank you. I guess that's the part I'm most interested in. Once sloc is removed from SPRO, what about any existing stock that resides in the storage location/bin level?

Hi scottcarricknwn

Once you delete the link, the storage location and the warehouse number get independent and their data including stock levels stay as they are. Then you can execute all IM processes on the storage location level and they won't be integrated with EWM., i.e. any changes to IM stocks will not be propagated to EWM.
