an item with no batch management in ECC. however, it required me to enter the shelf life in EWM.

Have you maintainrd the Min. Shelf Life Req. field on warehouse level of material master data in transaction /scwm/mat1 on 'Whse Data' tab?

In SPRO --Extended Warehouse Management --Goods Receipt Process --Inbound Delivery --Batch Management and Remaining Shelf Life Check in the Inbound Delivery.

Here the Column Check BBD/SLED gives you more flexibility together with the corresponding Product Master settings.
