Does SAP PP-DS requires PP-PI

is there a need for implementing PP-PI first if you want to implement PP-DS? We currently run SAP MM and we use a seperate system with interfaces to SAP for planning and detailed scheduling and proces control. We also want to implement pp-pi but our focus lies on detailed scheduling. What is best to do? First pp-pi and pp-ds or all at the same time? Or can we run pp ds first. We have SAP s/4 hana 1809 release running. Thank you in advance.

Hi Lawrence

SAP S/4HANA 1809 brings PP/DS embedded into the ERP core, which means you don't need an additional APO system to get all the benefits of PP/DS. It also means additional benefits such as only one planning run for MRP and PP/DS materials, simplified master data maintenance and seamless integration.

PP/DS plans your materials using heuristics which have advanced features, such as planning with batch shelf-life, planning with finite capacity and much more. You also have the optimizer, to resolve complex scheduling situations and improve your resource scheduling.

Answering to your question, it doesn't make sense to use PP/DS without PP (or PP-PI). PP/DS will generate planned orders that will eventually become production or process orders and, for that, you will need all the PP-PI master data, such as BOMs and master recipes. Anyway, with Embedded PP/DS the master data is simplified, so your effort will be minimal with the master data creation. For example, you will create a material master and just flag the advanced planning checkbox and you will automatically have the PP/DS product created. The same logic is valid for the work center.

If you want to understand better the master data simplification implemented in PP/DS for S/4HANA, check the following article that I wrote some time ago:

Thank you for your answer. We want to do our entire production planning in pp/ds. At the moment it is done in an IBM system. As we want to migrate as much as possible towards SAP. We would like to tranfer the production scheduling into SAP and think that ppds could be a solution. We have a lot of routings, installations and articles so it is a complicated planning which requires a usefull tool. So we also need some automatic schedule option which tells the planner the most efficient and preffered planning.

Hello,

Yes PPDS scheduling required PP or PP-PI components, as we do the capacity planning and scheduling of planned and production/process order in PPDS and send results to ECC for execution.

Without having PP or PP-PI components in place, can you tell me for what purpose do you need PPDS planning?
