Bringing serialized material back in to inventory after it was issued out?

We have a scenario where a serialized material is issued out. In SAP it has status of AVLB but assigned no stock type, plant or storage location. Business would like to bring that same material/serial number back into inventory. Is this possible and what would be the best practice to do so?

We were actually able to perform a MIGO GR 501 and material/serial number were brought back into available inventory with correct equipment status (ESTO)
