Batch Management Activation Required in ERP?

Former Member

Hello,

Working at a long-time client with a mature ERP 6.0 system. New EWM project is being worked and the EWM project team desires to activate batch management to meet several client requirements. However, it is not used in the ERP and my understanding is that batch management is difficult to activate in a mature SAP environment.

My question - if batch management is activated in EWM, does it HAVE to then be activated in ERP? Is there a valid integration model where stock is managed in batches in EWM but not in ERP?

Appreciate any insight.

Hello Matthew,

You can explore a possibility to work with documentary batches in EWM. Documentary batches are non inventoried batch which is generated at time of GR process and at picking process in EWM. It means batches will not be in stock but it can be used for tractability purpose. This way you can avoid to activate real Batch management in ERP.

For inbound process, you can record documentary batches at time of Warehouse Task confirmation during Putaway

For outbound process, it can be recorded at time of Picking Warehouse task confirmation.

Cross-System Communication of Documentary Batches
  • For outbound processing documentary batches are updated in ERP after Goods Issue is posted.
  • In a similar way, documentary batches in inbound processing are updated when goods are received in SAP ERP.

Please go through the below link for more information of documentary batches.

Hi,

you can not use a combination of batch management in EWM, but not in ERP. Because batch management influences stocks, so this can not be independent of in both systems. If there is a batch management material in ERP, the batch information has to be reflected in the EWM quant. Having batch information in the EWM quant without having batch in ERP doesn't work (with one exception, see below). There is also no "activation" of batch management in EWM. The information that a product is batch management, always comes from the material master. Setting up batch management in ERP in general is not difficult (but requires consideration of what this will mean for the stocks), but you can not simply activate this for material you have already in stock (for details see SAP Note "1873593 - Batch management flag is not possible to set / unset"). So maybe the EWM project team should specify what they want to do and consider the consequences.

Maybe an option would be to use documentary batches (https://help.sap.com/viewer/3d97bec9bf1649099384bb8167df3cf2/9.5.0.2/en-US/95cbcb53ad377114e10000000a174cb4.html)?

And it is EWM. NOT eWM - Duh!
And if your question includes the word "transfer order" - do NOT tag the question with Extended Warehouse Management!
