The SAP Best Practices for SAP Integrated Business Planning for Supply Chain (SAP IBP) comes with many assets to help you fasten and safeguard your implementation project. The better you understand the different assets, the easier you can take advantage of all the benefits the SAP Best Practices for SAP IBP can provide. In this blog, we'll explain the sample planning area and the related assets.

You can generally set up a runnable system including preconfigured planning UIs using Excel Add-in or the FIORI-app Planner Workspaces, sample data, analytics, forecast models, and alerts with the SAP Best Practices assets. The assets are updated and tested every release to ensure compatibility with the latest release and high quality.

Let's start with an overview of the different asset types. In general, we differentiate between assets available in the system directly (marked with the green box in the following chart) and assets you can download via the SAP Signavio Process Navigator (marked with the orange box). Today we're focusing on the green part of the explanatory chart: assets that are delivered as part of the solution. To understand the content of the orange box, please check out the next blog

As you might know, SAP IBP delivers several sample planning areas for specific use cases. They come with:

  • Attributes
  • Master data types
  • Key figures
  • Planning levels
  • Planning operators
  • Versions

For example, the sample planning area SAPIBP1 is a unified planning area that is delivered with SAP IBP and supports end-to-end business processes. It includes the following SAP IBP applications:

  • IBP for sales and operations
  • IBP for supply (w/o response)
  • IBP for inventory
  • IBP for demand

This sample planning area is the base for the time-series based solution processes delivered with the SAP Best Practices content. We update the sample planning area every release to ensure that the latest and greatest functionalities in the applications are working smoothly and the needed master data types and key figures are available. We're constantly improving and simplifying the sample planning area with new features in the calculations, for example like IBP_ADD_TIME_DIMENSION function in 2408. You can also use only a part of the sample planning area when you for example just need the demand part, or the inventory part. Why should you use the sample planning area SAPIBP1 as a base for your own implementation? Of course, you can create your own planning area from scratch, but this needs quite some time, knowhow and effort. We recommend you to use the sample planning areas as a base for your own customer specific planning area and just change and add what you need to change.

Besides, you can get more assets when copying a sample planning area. You just have to click the checkbox "Copy Planner Workspaces, Analytics, and Alerts".

Which assets you get depends on the sample planning area. Currently, we provide here assets for the SAPIBP1 and SAP7F sample planning area - but there's more to come.

After the copy of the sample planning area SAPIBP1, your new planning area already has

  • Forecast models
  • Forecast error profiles
  • Segmentation profiles
  • Analytics stories
  • Alert definitions
  • Charts and dashboards
  • Preconfigured planner workspaces

When SAP7F is your source, the list is a bit different:

  • Alerts
  • Charts and dashboards
  • Preconfigured planner workspaces
  • Procedure Playbooks
  • Analytics Stories (starting with 2411)

As with all assets, you can also adapt, change, and enhance these objects to your needs. If you don't need them, you can also delete them easily. Our recommendation is to use this feature because the deletion of not-needed objects is faster compared to creating them from scratch.
