SAP Asset Performance Management (APM) has officially launched Embedded IoT, built on the market-leading Cumulocity platform. This marks a major milestone in how SAP supports asset health monitoring with cutting-edge IoT and AI innovations.
For some context, you may have seen this note on SAP for Me or read my previous blog. Now, as Embedded IoT becomes generally available, it’s a good time to briefly recap why this innovation can help you get more value from the solution.
Embedded IoT is foundational for to provide AI-assisted asset health monitoring and how we build future innovations. With this new offering, APM offers enhanced capabilities that will transform how you manage and monitor assets.
1) Simplify connectivity scenarios.
A new capability is available now to enable file-based integration as an efficient channel to bring IoT sensor data into APM. Please check out this documentation on the Help Portal that details the steps to set up a process to integrate your timeseries data source via compressed files (Parquet file format).
2) Seamlessly manage IoT devices.
Our first priority was to ensure APM can be easily integrated with operational and analytical data sources such as OT middleware/data consolidation layers, data historians/lakes using the file-based interface described above and REST API. And now SAP will shift its focus to bring IoT device integration and management capabilities based on Cumulocity to you in 2025.
3) Continuously monitor asset health in a closed loop.
APM is seamlessly integrated with S/4HANA through a unified data model, enabling an end-to-end asset management process—from defining maintenance strategies to executing them in a closed feedback loop. With Embedded IoT, we will continue to innovate by refining the use of AI and rules to monitor assets in condition-based and predictive maintenance strategies. We've already begun simplifying and enhancing the rule management experience—check out the latest updates on the new “monitoring” and “derivation” rules in the documentation.
As Embedded IoT is now generally available, all new customers will be provisioned with this technology. Existing customers can visit the SAP Help Portal to find updated documentation marked “Embedded IoT”. Please reach out to your account manager to start the process of moving your existing APM tenants to Embedded IoT. Please also stay tuned for more technical insights on SAP Community from our product management colleagues in the coming days.
